With this being the worst year prob ever, What will weanling prices be like,
Will the lack of silage quality and probably a high meal price really pull down the prices this Autumn?

Would €800 for nice shapey 350 KG CH bulls be too much to ask :o

What do ye think folks will the Autumn trade be like? :)

Would be inclined to agree with you OP, I'm going to winter more of mine this year. The export quality animals should still be good, but the plainer types will be cheaper, how much by is anyone's guess. There is also more calves this year too.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Same happens year after year with autumn born weanlings. Some fellas keep them until August and add lib meal over the summer. Calves go out the gate well over 500kgs for the same money they would have made 8 or 9 weeks earlier and a lot lighter, with a lot less cost gone into them. I got that tee shirt myself and wouldn't get caught again -:)

Export type bull will more than likly stay above 2 euro's/kg however non export will be around 250-300 with there weight. with heavy type averaging 1.75/kg. This is only a wild guess Cattle than can be finished pre new year will hold in price a certain extent it is lighter cattle that will get hit the most

Just like prices that were strenghting on the way up over the last two years on the presunption that prices would rise the oppostie will happen over the nest 12-18 months prices will drop on negative market sentiment

The boss here had 7 out on saturday in carnew. 3 heifers and 4 bulls. They were the plainer ones of the batch, all blues weighed 402 to 430 and made 870 to 1100. 2 heifers made 1000. They only had a creep feeder for a month or so. They sold very well given the trade on the day. Leg wax saw them sell there and we agreed that maybe they should have been gone 6 weeks ago as they were big enough.

so is it better to get a weanling to in or about 350kg and go with him or put more weight on?

I was talking to a relative home from the US. He said down texas way (sounds like a song), they are slaughtering suckler cows big time. When they are gone there will be a big time shortage of Beef. Cristal Ball is right....
    Bad weather here can also mean bad weather elsewhere;

thats a fairly normal cycle there so I wouldn't be over concerned, if we see a shift of policy regarding US ethanol requirements it could have a much bigger effect in the opposite direction one might assume, but this may not happen in a election year as the Yanks like there cheap gas, and a changing of laws to reduce requirement for ethanol would lift fuel prices.

is there many fellas on here going to casterate their weanlings this year im in two minds about it.the comic is promoting this big time but now that justin is a factory man it may just be a parting shot to suit the factory agenda

I was in Ennis today, good Export type bulls around the high 300 Kgs making around the €3/Kg also. Overheard some dealers say that they would be better off bringing them to Sixmilebridge mart.........

probably would too considering some of the prices I have heard from there. Used to show allot of cattle there when I was in short pants. Clare Marts really made a slip up not taking control of Sixmilebridge. Cant beat a bit of good competition between marts.
heeding to a weaning sale so will let ye know how it goes, at €3 kilo I won't be busy

bull weanlings to be sold... dont bother

bull weanlings to be kept.. 2 weeks prior to weaning/housing, easier on man and beast and no lying around on wet grass with sore balls ... they thrive from the off! tried both methods

Make sure you don't castrate bull weinlings that you think might be suitable for export next spring or you'll end up with very few wanting them - finishers because they are too good and exporters because they are castrated.
