ATV Remote and Macbook

Is there any way to stop the Apple TV remote from controlling my Macbook Pro when I'm using the Apple TV? It's so annoying when trying to do stuff on it and the remote keeps changing the volume on the Macbook or starting a song in iTunes. Obviously, the Macbook needs to be on with iTunes running for the Apple TV to connect to it so is there a way to stop the remote interacting with it?

System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Advanced -> Disable remote control infrared receiver
