Having a bit of trouble off the tee of late. i've started using "masters" graduated tee's..many of you will know the brand. well..im not sure what size tee to be using when it comes to particular clubs. for all my irons 4-pw,i've been using the red tee's which i think they are 12mm high (above ground) but im just not getting the right ball contact. what is the correct height for you ball sitting on the tee?

It really depends on the player. For me when using a tee for an iron shot, the ball should be barely higher than the grass, as if it was sitting on a lovely fluffy lie on the fairway. Where do you find you're hitting the ball on the club, up high or blading it? You will need to experiment and find what tee height results in you hitting the sweet spot the most.

I'd recommend heading to a range that has grass that you can hit off & trying out a variety of heights.

For me it would be similar to previous poster, just a fraction off the ground

it might sound odd..but it like im hitting through the tee more than the ball. im not blading the ball nor am i hitting the sweet spot either. i tend to bury the tee flat after my shots.

Well that sounds pretty much perfect except that you're just teeing it too high. Try teeing it lower or without a tee altogether to see how it goes.

well..the weird thing is. i tried the blue tee's(20mm) tonight and i struck the ball much sweeter but the ball went high and expected distance. but the ball just doesn't look right when your over the ball. i might try the smaller tee's (orange) just to see what happens, rarely have a problem striking from the ground..just seems to be iron shots from tee.

Why don't you just push the tee further into the ground? Am I missing something?

put some market on the ball and see where it's impacting the face.
it's a balance of tee height and ball position to hit the sweet spot.
but you basically want the ball just off the ground, otherwise you will need to move it up in your stance to counteract the higher ball.

God this seems a mad conversation to me. By teeing high you are complicating your game in my opinion. You play most your shots off the deck in golf so would you not just tee yourself up a nice lie. So all you are doing is hitting your iron as normal. That way you have the normal control and distance as you would every other shot. The only time i would half consider teeing slightly higher than normal would be with my woods off the tee. That and the driver obviously.

they're graduated tees(castle shape)..the only go in so far.

You should change your tees for iron shots. I've seen those tees and think they're only useful for woods

I tee it a little higher then normal people would.

I move the ball a little more forward in the stance. I find it helps promote a clean ball strike with plenty of spin, while also promoting my draw so I'm never going to under hit a par 3.

I have an opinion that mid-high handicappers should be teeing it higher then " just off the grass". It is very blatant most have a steep impact, and their poor par 3 tee-offs are heavy, fat, twisty and loose TONS of distance.

By teeing the ball that little higher your ensuring a good strike, generating spin, don't need to burst the ball and you shouldn't ever catch it fat or heavy.

Just my thoughts though, I used to tee it normal at the start of the year and in recent months have been teeing it that bit higher, and have been much happier and gotten much more positive results.

Ah I see. Sorry, brain doesn't be fully functioning on a Sunday evening.

You should be hitting slightly down and through on an iron shot; hit the ball and then the ground. The tee should be barely showing above the grass and you shouldn't be using the castle tees as they tee it up too high.

However as said above, many players hit the ball fat etc. and a higher tee will help.

Use a normal short tee and tee it as low as you can before you start to have problems. Work on your swing so that you can hit off a very low tee.
