Fecked Laptop

My niece was moving into her new apartment today, and came across a laptop that had been sealed in a plastic bag for about 3 years.

I was skeptical that it would even start, but it did, but on boot-up it gives continuous loud beeps, Windows starts no problem, was looking to give it a new life and format/reinstall Windows. But half of the keyboard keys won't function.

i re-seated the RAM, the HD, checked the Motherboard for any visual damage. I dismantled the Keyboard, to see if any signs of a spill or damage, but nothing.

Any suggestions, other than chuck it back in the bag for the next unsuspecting visitor.

    here's the laptop:

Run Memtest86+ and see if the RAM passes.

Have you tried an external keyboard?

Though the three beeps indicate some internal diagnostic error... usually RAM or graphics.

was thinking of that, so i could at least format and hope the laptop keyboard is just software related rather than hardware. Might give that a go tomorrow.

It's not 3 beeps, it's rapid beeps, too fast to count how many, really ear-piercing, starts at the boot screen and only stops at the Windows screen.

    Tried a linux livecd?

The beeps are early during boot (BIOS in control) or later when windows kicks in?

i have just fixed this today, i opened the laptop fully, i noticed that the ribbon connecting the keyboard panel was not fully connected, i re-inserted it and the keyboard now works and the beeping has stopped. I added some more paste to the heatsink as well to be sure, it looked rather dry.

I assume you mean you cleaned off the current paste and applied some new paste?

yeah that what i did, they had some weird looking gold funnel coming from the fan over the processor, the paste was beneath this.

First time opening a laptop so that funnel is probably standard.
