So I've just started a new job and so my training program needs to adjust in line too...

I'd normally have oats about an hour before setting off, but now I'll need something to eat and be out on the bike right after.

Can anyone suggest anything for me?

Depends on your stomach and how hard you're going. You may be fine with your normal breakfast.

A couple of years ago I did a road race immediately after scoffing a BLT baguette. Indigestion followed.

I usually have 2 scrambled eggs and a banana before cycling to work.

It's only 11 miles though. I usually do it between 43 - 50 mins, not too fast.

The spin will be 32km normally done at a pace of circa 30km/hr

For an hour you don't really need anything, but the oats are fine, add in a banana or something else low GI like a wholemeal bagel and honey/marmite/humus

Its not for the cycle I'm looking for the breakfast, just a breakfast that won't be tough on my stomach while cycling. My plan is to get up, breakfast, cycle, home, shower then off to work

Id go with a banana and a snickers.

Can you bring something small to eat for when you get to work?

Yeah sure why not? It will give you all you need for the cycle anyway. You could bring a "proper" small brekkie with you to work, if you have a microwave in work you could bring microwave oats.

    .
    ..banana and snickers....or protein shake?

    What?

Thought it might explain the oats :)

How about just a strong espresso?
I remember reading that 20mns of excercise at 60% of max heart rate on am empty stomach will kick start the fat burning part of the metabolism for the day.

Pretty certain all that exercising on an empty stomach was debunked and is only a myth

Here's one article(I know, not the most reliable source)

There's something fishy about the Livestrong interpretation of that 2011 study, or maybe the study itself.

They claim that a low GI breakfast (a) increases fat utilisation whilst (b) giving the body the energy it needs for exercise. It can't do both, surely.

They're also apparently relying on HR as a control of effort, which seems suspect.

I'm sure the study answers a question, but I'm not sure it's "should I eat breakfast before cycling to work".

There are other studies (quoted by leftism on here before) which show that having carbs available from food during exercise depresses fat utilisation.

Besides which, who the hell wants eggs and berries for breakfast?

I usually eat two shredded wheat and two slices of brown toast , coffee and then a berrocca before training, I'm always rushing out the door to meet the group.20 mins after I finish eating I'm able to tear along at 190 bpm. Try judge for yourself how long after eating you need to digest before cycling. It won't kill you!

Not sure this is a good idea for ordinary cyclists - it certainly doesn't strike me as pleasant.

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19197210

Caloric restriction (up to 40% for 3 weeks) and exercising after fasting overnight can improve a cyclist's PWR without compromising endurance cycling performance.

I used to commute from Bray to the city centre every day and a big bowl of corn flakes and a cup of tea used to get me to work every morning. Sometimes I'd go mad and put some sugar in the tea.
