NCT rip off!

I'm sure this topic has been discussed many times since the introduction of the NCT but my Nissan Primera failed the NCT on Friday just a couple of hours after that horrific crash near Tullamore that claimed four young lives. The reason for my car failing the NCT??? A tear in the driver's seat upholstery!

In the light of the tragedy that occurred on Friday the scam that is the NCT is an insult to the people of this country. It's simply another exercise to liberate us of our hard earned money while the real reasons for our poor road safety record remain ignored...

i can only asume your car failed the NCT and that awful accident occured for two very different reasons.

I also think it's very distasteful to aliken your NCT fail for a torn seat to an accident where there was numerous loss of life.

this should be locked, you need a real problem.

whatever happened in that accident is a whole other story, and sensitite enough i'd imagine.

    I dont get the connection?
Were the NCT people responsible for the crash or something?

With all due respect you're missing the point entirely. Yes, the NCT fail and the accident occurred for two very different reasons, that much is obvious, but I feel that failing a vehicle for torn upholstery is an insult to the people who died on Friday. My point being, why is a tear in upholstery a 'safety' issue?? It completely ignores the real reasons for road fatalities and does nothing to prevent further tragedy.

no he's right, its a NCTS scam to get €28 off him for the re-test (less the staffs time and the overheads of course...)

Setting aside the ridiculous rubbish about trying to find some non existant connection to a fatal crash ,a torn seat would be a free visual retest, no? So who's being ripped off exactly and how? OP are you implying the NCT are in cahoots with seat upholsteres and getting backhanders?

Is a tear in a seat really an NCT failure?

Are you sure it was tear in upholstery and not the seat belt?
If its the seat you should appeal that.

They'll pass seats with torn and worn bolsters once there's no wire bits hanging out, post a pic so we can see the damaged seat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,795 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

A bit of black tape temporarily fixed on seat might have saved the OP the retest.
    Still, crazy thread.

Sorry OP I dont seem to see how you could bring the awful crash into the same conversation as your meaningless little tear on your seat. Man up, get it sorted, should be a visual retest with no cost. The crash killed people, you have been mildly inconvenienced by this. Cant see how they are in the same discussion.

It does not ignore the "real reasons for raod safety" as you put it. The test still tests other safety aspects of the car. How would removing this failure of your NCT increase the safety of your car?

.... what else did it fail on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

That's not a tear in the upholstery, its a slice through the foam of the seat.

Here are the relevant rules from the NCTS manual:
    wrote:
The driver’s seat should be failed where the seat support foam cannot be contained, e.g. keeps falling out. This does not mean the seat fails if the upholstery is torn or worn. A seat cover is an acceptable means of containing the foam.

That seat looks OK to me, unless this is the case:

Agreed. Is that a metal bar I can see? You'll need to stitch that and not just cover it with tape.

I would imagine that when you sit back in the seat the foam would protrude. Also the metal support would be exposed.

If it affects the way the seat holds you (and the more I think about it, the more I think it would) then it's a fail. And if there's metal exposed then that could be a real problem in a rear-end impact.

I'd imagine a medium to large man would push that bolster out of place no problem. The slice also seems to traverse further down below the surface tear.

By your logic if you'd fixed what is an obvious tear, with metal showing, in your seat before the NCT then the unfortunate people would still be alive.
    [IMG][/img]NCT1.jpg

So it's not the NCT's fault it's yours.

its a visual re-test no? So you wont have to pay anything. Unless I am missing somethere the re-test should be done as zero cost??

I cant see why they would charge the re-test fee for this alone its odd that its on the shhet as €28.

Not if the metal is sticking in the tester

pack it with an old tea towel and get somebody to stitch it up properly.

Its a fail, and should be, get over it. Its how you go about fixing it that determines if your out of pocket by much.

It must have failed on something else as well when they are doing a retest using the test lane?

    Yes, driver's side headlight misaligned.

So you were paying for a retest anyway, and the slashed seat was just an excuse to give out about the NCT?
