Hi there, a bit of advice needed.

My wife has a 97 Corolla 1.3 and it's getting on in years. She's just been quoted €550 to get it fixed up (new tyres, brake pads, etc.).

Not sure whether to get it fixed up, sell it or just scrap it?

Or would it be worth getting the work done on it and trying to sell it or trade it in?

If you can do without the expense of updating then I'd be inclined to hold onto it.
I'm assuming ye have the car a few years so know there won't be pitfalls.
However I'd be shopping around for tyres and pads.
You should get fine tyres on that for 150.
Pads for a corolla are about 25 quid and they are real easy to fit.
I'd imagine an indi garage would have the pads on for you for 75 max.

I think 550 is possibly too much to spend on the car... Try spend less.
    Marty.

If you're going to sell it, just stick it up on Adverts or Donedeal as is. You won't get a fortune for it, 500 - 1000 depending on condition, NCT, TAX left etc. Even with the work done, the price won't rise substantially tbh.

If she's happy enough to stick with it however, there's great bangernomics value in running something like that into the ground rather than losing a fortune every year in depreciation etc.

Well the first thing I'd be doing is checking to see if the emissions are ok. Those engines start to burn oil as the miles pile on if they're not properly maintained (they need to be serviced every 6,000 miles or six months, whichever is the sooner) and if they're burning oil then they'll need a lot of work to get them through the emissions.

However, if the emissions in it are fine and it's definitely not burning oil, then I'd fix it.

With proper maintenance those cars will do 300,000 miles easily - the 4E-FE engine fitted to them is astonishingly reliable, even by Toyota standards it's one good engine. The VVTi engines that came afterwards are nowhere near as good.

Thanks for the tips everyone. The car has only 100k miles on it. Might try to sell it on Adverts and see what I can get.

Only 100k on that engine? Talk her into keeping it and find a good indy mechanic, my 99 1.3 just past the 201k mark and should be good for another 100k!

Hold onto the car, shop around for tyres ,breakpads etc. Otherwise sell it and you will end up spending even more money to move up a few years in terms of reg plate. The new car may need new tyres and pads within 12 months!
