Thanks for that ck101. When I finally plucked up enough courage to check the bike thoroughly I discovered that both shifters are kaput, and handlebar did a great hammer job on the top tube which is now cracked. Funds are zero for a new frame so I'm going to have a go at repairing it. Thanks again for a heads up on the shifter though.
