Mary Colum, who was a noted US critic during the 20th century and a friend, with her husband Padraic Colum, of Hemingway Joyce, Fitzgerald and the gang, was born Mary Maguire in Collooney.

But would anyone know if she had any siblings and what they were called?

    When was she born approximately?

Have u checked the 1911 Census (if she was born then).

As she was born in 1884, there is only 1 Mary Maguire who fits the age profile in 1911 Census's, (when 1 Mary Maguire was listed as 27 yrs).

Not unless she was born in Sligo and had moved away before 1901 and 1911 or was not present in Sligo on both occasions of the census being taken.

Thanks, I Need the Sun - she was in a convent school (St Louis in Monaghan, where I think her schoolmates included Rose Fitzgerald (later Kennedy) and Katherine Tynan; she had been brought up by her grandmother... I think she more or less went straight from the convent to Dublin at 18 and started working, teaching in St Ita's in Cullenswood House on Oakley Road.

The reason I'm curious is that I've come across a letter to my grandfather from a B Maguire in which he refers to Molly having bought a freewheel bicycle, having been used to riding an old fixie, and B was nervous that she might forget and try to stop by standing on the pedals. I assumed B Maguire was a relation - maybe a brother - and wondered what family she had.

Have you tried using the Irish national census for 1901 and 1911 yet? Its free.

    Google "Irish census 1911".

There's loads of angles and avenues you could try.

For "B", I would suggest Brigid for starters in County Sligo..was it written by a female type hand?

Good luck with search, you'll come up with something for sure...

I have! 153 Mary Maguires in Dublin!

It looks like a male hand and the forms of address and speech are more male.

Oh, wait, this looks like her! http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000205903/ living in 1 Ovoca Road. But that doesn't tell me her brothers or sisters, etc!

There's a portrait of her by AE Russell in the Niland Collection/Model gallery.

Is she a relative of Padraic Colum?

Also, I don't know if you have read it already but she wrote a biography called 'Life and the Dream', there's a copy available in the Sligo Library.

    De wife.

I've read Life and the Dream (interesting about James Joyce, a close friend of herself and de husband) but can't remember if she talks about siblings. Should look it up again.

Ah, had a bit of a brain block there and totally forgot about that connection (d'oh!). Good luck with your search!
