I have a 2006 ford fiesta zetec steel 1.25, i bought it from a dealer 2 months ago and have brought it back since but they say its fine, but I get somewhere in the region of 150km for 20 euro at 1.60 a litre, i filled the tank about 3 weeks ago it was 1.57 a litre and it cost 65 to fill to the brim, I got 470km frrom the full tank, and no im not rallying the car around, sometimes i accelerate hard but not excessive and even still thats not always, a friens of mine has the same car but 07, same engine and when they fill there tank to the brim they get 670km a tank, any suggestions as to why mine is so terrible? this is very heavy on juice especially for a 1.25, i was previously driving a 1.6 primera and i thought that was heavy on juice but this fiesta is basically doing the same? Any help is appreciated, also one mechanic said its running rich straight away by putting his finger in the exhaust another did emissions test and said they were fine, but when i start it up the smell of petrol is piercing on the throat? thanks.

thats 35 -40 to the gallon i think (they have a small tank so im basing that on using 8 gallons to do the 470 km) which isnt bad given you boot it a little. Your friend could be lying of course or maybe he's someones Granny really. :-)

My shaky math tells me your bud is doing 46 to the gallon, quite feasible in a Fiesta but you'd really have to drive very gently to do it , or on longer journeys with less town driving than you perhaps

smwll of petrol is worrying tho....

Yeah its just really annoying as to why and i know there not lying because when i fill the tank full it tells me how much im going to get out of it and so does theirs mine has a 200k difference, maybe the car is just working it out on how the previous owner drove it, and also there is a 45 litre tank in them so roughly 10 gallons :/

I worked out that if you got 470 km from 65 euro at 1.57 a litre that you are doing about 32 mpg (€65/1.57 a litre = 41.4 litres), which to me seems quite bad. You would expect a Fiesta to do at least 40 mpg and over 50 mpg if driven carefully. I've got more than 32 mpg on much larger cars and I certainly don't give them any mercy (although I do service them by the book, which helps).

Has the car been serviced recently? Is it overdue a service? A good service as well as being vital for maintaining the reliability of the engine in the long run will improve fuel consumption as well.

Your car has 45l tank, if after 470km yellow light came on, there is still 5-8 litres of petrol left in the tank. You need to calculate your usage properly:

Fill the tank, drive for 400km, and then fill it again and see how much petrol was used.
    That's the best way.

Hiya i had an old model first a few hears ago that wad drinking petrol. It was a strong smell as well. Turned out the tubing to the carbirator had detached. Meaning it was staying open all the time instead of closing over after the car was driven.
A smell of petrol is a indication of a peak ad well. But im sure you would have noticed that by now.

Are you sure it's not leaking?

Yeah it was serviced two months ago when I bought it, but what you worked out is about right because its doing the same to the gallon as the previous 1.6 i drove which definitly indicates something wrong?

No te yellow light cones on 80km left so it came on at 390
