    Hi,
Just looking for some advice for a beginner in self-defence. I'm in the limerick area and pretty close to UL so that would be my first choice if anything is suitable. I'm pretty much a complete beginner and looking to up my confidence if I ever get into a street fight (not that I want to). Would krav maga be the way to go, or maybe boxing? I'm 32, 6ft 1" and weight around 14 stone.
    All thoughts welcome....

    Thanks...

Heya, I'd say the two most important things are that its close enough that you keep going and that you enjoy it enough that you keep going so with that in mind I recommend trying a few different ones out and see if you prefer grappling or striking.

MMA is the best all rounder but if you prefer striking I'd recommend Boxing or Muay Thai, for grappling I'd recommend Judo, BJJ, Wrestling.
Wouldn't recommend Krav Maga at all personally.

Hope that helps, best of luck in your training!

Cheers for the advice. Just curious to know why you don't recommend Krav Maga?

While there Krav Maga is a viable system there are a lot of incompetant cowboys teaching it in this country.

Most martial arts will do the job in terms of self defence if there is a good teacher and you enjoy it enough that you work on it. If you don't like it and only show up for training because you feel that you need to learn self defence it won't work.

I don't know if non UL students can train with the college clubs but I've competed against the lads in UL's Shotokan Karate club and they are a good group in terms of quality and in terms being decent craic so I would reccomend that you join that.

Loads of reasons, all of which have been analysed to death in other threads so I'll refrain from some Krav bashing despite how good it would feel haha, easy enough to search the forum for KM threads.
Suffice to say I doubt the validity of the entire style for a multitude of small reasons.
