as you may have seen i have some videos up of my young setter bitch in training. she is coming on quite well and when she encounters birds she is doing most of what i expect of her. . . my issue is with rabbits. i am trying to work land with her that has little or no rabbits but given that i am surrounded by the little shaggers its not always possible. when she encounters them she hunts the ground and loses her reason. any tips you can offer me to discourage her from wanting to hunt bunnies? i want her for setting birds not flushing rabbits. thanks.

Never trained a setter but I had springer who used chase hares and rabbits, hed hunt like mad but the minute a rabbit would bolt hed be off, i got an electric training caller after a few beeps and light shocks he presto he stopped, and he never batted an eyelid at them again.

it will help but if it a young dog i wouldn jump with the coller just yet . it still a pup and just because you want him or her all grown up doesnt mean you have to force it . if ya dont have a coller, chase after him and give him a gud shake , shouting no it will soon sink in . but dont call him back to you and them shake him or he be nervous every time you call him .

if you have her trained to drop just drop her when she get on one and lead her away. if not then just ignore her turn away and walk away and she will eventually miss you and come looking. its not really a problem and no need for e collar or any correction. she will learn to love feather over fur the more praise she gets on birds and especially when you start shooting them for her. if she didn't chase then you would have a problem
