Parkingtag.ie SMS top up question

    Hi folks,

I just got the parking tag for my car today and am a bit confused about topping up via SMS "out of hours". Basically, I park in an Orange zone which runs from 7am - 7pm [Mon - Sat]. Before I had the tag, each night I would put €2 in the parking metre out of normal paying hours (e.g. after 9pm) and this would automatically provide me with a ticket from 7am - 9am the following morning.

However, I just tried to top up via SMS tonight at 9pm (i.e. to pay for 3 hours parking tomorrow morning), but it hasn't taken into account that the Orange zone i'm parked in ceases at 7pm! Instead I got a text back saying "You are paid for 180 mins in the Orange zone, your parking will expire @ 00:00 hours tonight".

Should the SMS top up service not provide the exact same service as the actual paid metre in that it should recognise I'm topping up out of paid hours and the parking should take effect the following morning??

Unfortunately there is a limitation here in that telling the system the zone colour doesn't really indicate the location. As operating hours differ based on location and not zone (ie. Some red zones are 24 hour, some are 7-7) the system can't assume anything other than the worst case scenario which is a 24 hour zone.

On balance, this is probably the best between simplicity and advanced usage. Texting PARK 180 ORANGE followed by some arbitrary location code would make it less easy to use, and you'd have to put up a bunch of signage to make clear the location codes.

So, your only real option is to wake up at 7am to send the text to park for 2 hours. Maybe there are SMS services or apps that let you automate this, but I'm not sure of any.
