I wonder if anyone else is seeing this - film rentals which were recently available in itunes are now missing.

Included are: x-men first class, Thor, Iron Man 2, John Carter.

    Is this common?

The studio probably pulled them because there's a special edition Blu-ray coming out, or in order to give exclusivity to another download service. It happens quite a lot. Apple's licensing agreement with studios would only allow them to provide titles for a limited time. The studios are terrified of giving Apple or any single online store dominance over the others.

Maybe the last person didn't leave them back.

The Marvel films have disappeared from stores since before The Avengers. It's next to impossible to get your hands on Thor or Captain America in HMV stores and they can't order them in from suppliers. Expect that issue to be rectified once The Avengers hit's DVD and Blu. As for John Carter, well there are rumblings of an other Blu-Ray release, this time with all the features on the US release as well as the 7.1 audio mix so that may be the reason for that one going missing.

I've just noticed that all these films are available now to buy and were rentable at one time but not now.
In fact, the iTunes store appears to have many more films for sale than for rent.

I wonder what the policy is regarding rental titles? They appear to be rentable for an initial period, are then unavailable later. e.g. True Grit (Cohen Bros. version).

I'd like get an answer as this would inform my rental choices eg. is there any point in keeping a rental wish list?.

Any idea where to find out?

All of the films mentioned are on Netflix, so as Sad Professor mentions it's probably an exclusivity agreement.

None are on my Netflix (Ireland). Where did you find them?

Thor and Iron Man 2 are on the US Netflix and have been for the past few months. X-Men and John Carter are not and are unlikely to be added to Net US for a considerable time if ever.
