Repair Rear Wheel Arch

Would it be reasonable to have to get the whole side of the car re-sprayed to fix damage to the rear wheel arch pictured below?

Was told it would have to be done because it's close to the door.

The arch itself is fairly bent out of shape, and the panel above the trim is pushed in, but not dented - the sort of thing you'd expect to just pop back into shape.

Was just in looking for a price, haven't committed to anything yet.

You can't just paint the one small area where the damage is. A proper job means that the paint has to be blended into the surrounding bodywork which would mean painting most of the quarter panel I recon.

Sure I get that. But there's a big difference between most of the rear panel, and the whole driver's side of the car!

How much requires painting depends on the condition of your current paint work.

If its swirled or faded or generally in less then perfect condition then spraying just one area with new paint will stand out a mile.

honestly i cant see why it would have to be done for being to close to the door as long as it opens and locks as it normally should and their is no chassis damage and no sharp edges it will pass a nct ..the dent prob will pop out if you can get to it from the inside as for the scratch etc a good polish will make it look better

Really new paint next to badly maintained paint will look terrible. A painter will either fade the new paint in to the old paint where possible or will recommend painting the entire side if he thinks such a blend will not work in your specific instance.

Here's two examples of what we are talking about:

Notice the obvious colour difference in the front door colours compared to the older paint?

OTOH the painter might just reccomend doing the whole side of the car because it will mean more $$$$ for him!!! TBH OP it all depends on how fussy you are regarding cosmetics. If a subtle difference in paint tone between panels is something that would be unacceptable you your eye, then a full job may be worthwhile. On the other hand if you are not too pushed about cosmetics a cheap and cheerful paint job on the affected area would suffice. Sure, on inspection you could notice the joint but shure in Ireland most cars are overlain with 20 shades sh!te anyway so it mightn't be a problem. The only important thing here is that whatever repair is done safeguards against future corrosion - all else is superficial and cosmetic.

Thanks for the replies. Basic concensus seems to be that it very well could need to have the whole side done, which is what I wanted to find out.

no no you don't need to get all side done. your car can be easily fixed spraying only quarter panel and polishing the rest of the side. there's enough space to blend the color on quarter panel. if only you were closer to dublin.. :)

Just wanted to finish off this thread, got the car back from a different repair shop today. Very happy with the results.

Looks like a good job

How much of the car was painted in the end?

I didn't ask to be honest. I just had a look at it myself before I went in to pay and he was closing up.

Studied it in direct sunlight today and it looks to match up pretty good. As you can see from the before shots, it doesn't always be the cleanest anyway. It was the damage that I really wanted repaired.
