    Hi,

A while ago I was looking at some trailer/seat to carry my kid with me on the bike, and perhaps appropriate bike to have it attached to. My friend in his generosity offered me (for free) some of his old parts , he hasn't been using anymore to fit on my own bike if I decide to it myself - its purpose will be short rides with my son.

    In the basket I have:

Rear and front shimano 105 derailer
    FSA cranks
FSA bottom bracket (shimano's hollow tech 2 type)
    I have a 1 1/8 carbon fork
    Chris king headset
    Another 1" threaded fork (steel)
Shimano dura ace 1" threaded headset
    Few seatposts
    Brooks saddle
    Handlebars
    Some stems (mostly bmx stems)
    Time pedals
    Front Shimano 105 brake

Most of the stuff is new, some parts are used.
I don't want a road racer bike, but something with decent steel frame perhaps, could be a mountain bike that I could convert to whatever these parts would let me.

I was thinking about buying let's say something like trek 7.2 or Giant Rock or that type of bike and upgrade it with my newly given parts.

Now I'm 6'4" and Im not sure what size of bike should I look for. I tried my friends bikes (he is same height) and frames range from 58-61cm. In the bikes I was looking at on adverts size is in inches (i.e. 20") and this is confusing for me.

So could you advise me on:

    1) Size
    2) Type of the bike that would let me have either the seat or carrier for the baby attached to it.
    3) Bike that will take some of the parts I have. I understand Shimano 105 is a road group. Will it work with MTB frame, or hybrid frame.
    4) Anything else I should know about but I didn't ask due to my inexperience ?

    Thanks

    P.S.
I will have the use of his tools too for a while as he's going away. Almost a full package, shouldve asked him for his car keyes...

Well the brooks saddle is a great addition to any bike but all those other parts are road bike parts which wouldn't make much sense as upgrades to a trek 7.2 or the like especially if what you want it for is to cart kids around.

Some sort of hybrid bike or a mountain bike with a rigid fork and slick tyres would probably be best suited to the job. Either that or a cargo bike such as one of the bakfiets linked to by Qualitymark or maybe some sort of xtracycle type thing but those are fairly expensive options.

As for the actual carting of kids (provided you don't get a cargo bike). There have been a few threads dealing with the best way to carry kids on a bike. It's not something I have any personal experience of but from what I've read I think a trailer is probably the best way to go. They seem a lot safer than carrier seats since they can have roll-cages and safety harnesses as well as greater protection from the elements.
