    Hi,
I've been toying with the idea of getting VMWare certified in an effort to try and improve my skillset. From looking on the VMWare site i can see there are a number of different VCP options e.g. Data Centre Virtualisation, Desktop Virtualisation. Can anyone tell me which option can be considered as encompassing all the fundamentals of the technology and which option would prove to be the most in demand out in the workplace? Im a complete newbie in virtualisation terms so will be starting from scratch. Also, can anyone recommend anywhere that offers VMWare as an evening course at a good price? Any information/feedback is much appreciated.

    Dudwell,

As far as I understand, only certified VMWare training centres can run aVMWare courses. These courses tend to be expensive, minimum 2k+ for a 5 day course. You may not find part-time or weekend courses available.

In terms of what course you should be looking at, I would say it probably depend on your industry experience to date. I would say you would need to have a good working knowledge of server technologies, networking and at least a basic understanding of visualization concepts.

What type of industry experience do you have to date?

    Hi Enigma,
I'm currently working in a third level support role and have about 7 years experience in the IT sector. I hold a CCNA & MCSE so have a pretty solid understanding of networks/ servers but no experience/knowledge on the virtualisation side of things. Any recommendations on what might be the best route to take are much appreciated.

    Dudwell,

In that case, I would recommend the following:

The vSphere 5 course is 5 days, approx 2.5k, you can shop around. I've did the version 3.5 course a few years back, actually will be doing vSphere 5 later in the year hopefully.

given your experience, it will be handy enough for you. You can download ESXi and use the free licence to play around. You just need a half decent bit of tin with lots of RAM. It's not fully featured but you can build new VM's, do some basics on it.
