    is it possible to add these to your page without php or do you need php in order to contact onto paypal or whatever payment method you are using?

    Yep, it's possible to embed one without any server side code required - check out http://www.ecwid.com/.

    As an aside, PHP is just one of the technologies available.

    Excellent! Best of luck with it - if your site does well, it might be worth your while getting your own cart installed, but that site looks like a great way to get started.
