    No photo's today.

Raining on and off and have a wet head!!!

Entering the showground as an Exhibitor was grand but leaving at 4:30pm was a pain in it. Wanted to go towards Tullamore but made me go right at exit and spent 40 minutes going the 'Detour route' back to Tullamore!!!
    Not on.

Traffic control was a problem last year aswell!

Also the fields were pretty good during the day but leaving is was pretty muddy and wet.

Good day out I thought. Got in early and out just after 3 and had no problems with traffic - on the Cloghan side. Wasn't even stopped once. Lots to see. Thought there were a lot more junk trade stands there this year (Cheap Chinese crap) and that possibly the quality of cattle all round was a little bit back on last year, but this is probably to do with the weather.

Just n case the op didn't make it, I got a few pics of the girls that he was looking for:

got there about 9 .no queues, left about 4.30 with slight delay leaving. came upon a serious RTA on the route home and had to detour.

had decided before hand not to spend too much time at the livestock but was impressed by the Simmentals which I saw, also a big turn out of shorthorn

taught some of the sheep classes were light and thought quality was down in some breeds. (why don't breed societies put more effort to promote their stock at a show like this ?)

was impressed by the inventions especially the pto sensor cut off. after much trekking through the stands eventually took 2 pages from the cheque book

over all an enjoyable day :)

To late in the year for the pedigrees, all the premier sales have taken place and ewes are with the rams. Ram's going in with ewes on 6th August translates to lambing 1st January. It's just wrong time of the year for the sheep really, nothing to do with a wish to promote there. Your not going to pull sheep to a show that have just started mating season....

    didn't think of that

but I still think some of the breed societies are sitting on their arses,

ok we've had sheep west earlier and the ploughing up later , both of which are at opposite sides of the country

Tullamore is a central venue & IMO the sheep exhibit tent yesterday should have been 2 to 3 times it's size .. I am a commercial producer, will be buying about 3 rams within the next 2/3 weeks, didn't see much either way yesterday to swing my final decisions

So, how does he get in with no exhibitor card? A hen under each arm :)

This seems like a deja Vu moment did you tell this story on here before and did I or someone else ask you the same question?

The exhibitors have to pay at the gate in tullamore, you deduct some money when you're sending off your entry fees and then pay going in, good system, stops a car load getting in because of maybe one exhibit

good event, my first time attending, well organised, got in early and was gone early enough as well so no traffic hassle at all

Totally agree with you, as member of one of the societies and a keen interest in atleast one of the others thought very poorly done...no information stands for the breed societies.
Not sure what the rules where for the tent as was more or less all commerical stands Hiltex, Mules, Tullow etc. Don't know why the societies weren't in there like the ploughing...

As for choices over next 2/3 weeks Charollais are always good:D

I was in the tent. Fairly hot for the poor sheep in the tent.

Why was the National Sheep Association (NSA) there. Aren't they from the UK?

Liked a pen of Suffolk lambs 'brightly coloured' near the sheep tent.

Rancher had a good day I seen!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 383 ✭✭jerdee

got a few showers but we are used to them now

ground was good only a little muck

angus cattle looked really good as a lot of entries in all classes

trade stand up from last year

also an awful lot of cattle handling items

little invention for closing gates was very clever

in 11am out at 530 no trffic much but bad rain all the way down to roscrea.

Won th'ould entry fees back anyway, best ram lamb had orf on the inside of his mouth and I didn't cop it until the judge opened his mouth to check his teeth. He said he couldn't give him a prize.
NSA has a good few irish members, we're members a while now

What are the benefits of being an NSA member?

Do they organise a ram sale at Blessington every year for their members?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 931 ✭✭✭The Nutty M

Was in the field before half 7 with no traffic.Had a good day after an awful time with a few thick stewards in the morning.Unloading and parking was a mockery (ps if anyone knows the email address of the chief steward it would be greatly appreciated).
Had a little walk around the show itself during the day looking at everything but was tied up with cattle for most of the time. Was out the gate at around 6 and was diverted due to the RTA.The real rain only arrived from Athlone onwards to home.

Wouldn't really call being a member as being cost effective but we go over to some of their events and get literature from them, we get updates on the latest sheep research from Moredun who are way ahead of anything that goes on here, There was a good few NSA members from england and N.I at the grassland asociation sheep conference and on our farm. NSA and Grassland Association are closely linked.
Its the NSBA (National Sheep Breeders Association) that have that sale in blessington I think
