Existing coating on bannisters?

I'm going to decorate my bannisters. The spindles are square with no fiddly bits. I will paint them white (suggestions - matt, satin or gloss?).

The handrail is dirty. It is covered in crud. Would this be old varish? And how would I go preparing it for new varnish?

Get some bleach and hot water. Give the rail a good soak and rub it well with a coarse rag. You will be surprised!

I've decided to strip the coating with varnish remover and it is going well
