Considering getting back into a sports car again. Mainly for weekend and events like cannonball, if you had the choice which would you go for. And which is the biggest head turner?

    07 997 Turbo
    04/05 360 Spider
    90's 355 Spider
09+ Camero SS in Yellow/Black (good car for events I think)

    07 997 Turbo - of course
04/05 360 Spider - would make the 355 feel agricultural
90's 355 Spider - really special and a firm favourite of mine but I think the 360 would be a better long term prospect ( they are much more reliable )
09+ Camero SS in Yellow/Black (good car for events I think) - not in this competition

    well for some ! ;)

Bumblebee Camero looks the business, but I'd have to echo the rest. Would love a 355, but the 360 makes more sense, but I can't see past the absolutely excellent 997 Turbo.

imo you have them listed in practicality order, which (again, imo) is the reverse of head-turning order :)

I'd be leaning towards a Nissan too, but more like an R34 GTR V-Spec with a little work done..

The R34 just seems a little more special than the current GTR imo. It's certainly more special than any porsche or ferrari in my eyes!

Get the camero. Don't forget the transformers badge tho :D

An R34 GTR is a savage piece of kit, but it's not more special than a Porsche or Ferrari. There's a big difference in the overall feel of a Supercar versus an equally quick regular car.
The R34 is a regular production car that's completely upgraded in every area, resulting in it beating most other supercars of its time. It's in the M3 vein of things. But a Supercar born and bred is just different, better somehow. Track times can't explain!
In any case, a 997 Turbo would beat the snot out of a standard R34. I know you can tune the R34, but you could also tune the Porsche if you wanted!

I like the 997 turbo too. I had a 997s for about a year, loved it ad drove it very day. The thing about the 997 is that for most it's a slight head turner and most people would not know the difference between a T and a non T. There are not many Ts about but there are quite a few 997s and non s around Dublin. Takes away a bit from the "special" factor. Don't see to many Ferrari or Camero on the road.

That's not what your Mrs thought! Seats go all the way back in a 997, ask her.:D

    Ferrari 360 for me.

It's just that bit more special than the others, I think it would put a smile on your face every time you go out the door in the morning no matter how bad things were.

Higher running costs no doubt but just that bit different to the others, brings a smile to the faces of other people too.

    None of that now!

He who talks about another mans Mrs is usually the one who doesn't see who his own Mrs is doing. Besides, any car is good unless the Mrs is a heifer.

I'm a massive fan of the R34 one of the best looking (performace aside) Jap cars of all time but to say it's more special than any porsche or Ferrari is complete nonsense - just list of a few of the iconic Porsche/Ferrari cars in your head there :D

    Maybe it's just me then.

Anytime I see a porsche or ferrari I have visions of a silver haired retired merchant banker driving it...

I know you're the Doc and all but do you think that the new GT-R would be serviceable in Ireland? A mate of mine had one here in London and he got to a point where he used to send it to Liverpool on a low loader for some servicing.

If i had the money for either of those i would buy something alot more unique and fun

The biggest head turner? Probably the Camaro...but then it depends on the heads :D

But I'd have the F355 if I had the choice from that list. My 2nd favorite Ferrari after the Testarossa.

Disclaimer...I have never driven a single one of these cars.

If I had the money I would want the best of both worlds. I.e. old school looks with modern performance. For example have a look at this.

Not that it would matter but if you had that beast here or something similiar you would still only be paying €52 a year tax! :)

Ive no interest in "proper" pure breed sports cars, never had (and I dont know why, they just seem delicate and of limited use I guess, Im engineering over pretension), so a Camaro SS or ZL1 stands way out for me on the list.

The ZL1 is also a faster road and track car than any other car on that list, is designed for abusive everyday driving and is the most headturning.. seems pretty obvious which ticks the most boxes! Its also a far rarer car than the rest on this side of the Atlantic. And number 9 in the top fastest Nordschlife tracked cars (above the GTR!).

The anti-American vibes here are so stupid when you look at how accomplished their modern performance cars are... at a fraction of the price of their peers.

Chris Harris has a good "European" review of the big Camaro and Mustang.

    Fcukin' A Matt.

The base level Mustang (4L V6) starts at $25k for crying out loud. Of course the more you want the more you will get and the more you pay but it's well achieveable to have a Ferrari eating 'Stang / Camaro / Chally for 1/4 the price. Will they hold their value long term like a Ferrari / Lambo? Fcuk no, but IMO that's all the better because you can drive them like they were designed to be driven and not care (as much) about the consequences. What's the point in having a car if it's treated like an ornament? Every car was designed to be driven - performance cars even more so.

In fairness even a used GT500 will cost you in the neighborhood of $100K. You can buy a hell of a lot of used Ferrari for $100K and it will be a lot more sophisticated than any Mustang or Camaro.

I have driven my cousins 360 which he owned from new. It was a spider with the f1 gearbox. I loved the noise, and it turned heads. I stopped to let him go to the shops, it was a sunny day and the hood was down. A crowd gathered and people started taking photos of their kids with the car. Do like the 360, fragility concerns me compared to Camero or 997t.

A 'used' GT 500 will cost you twice that and is more rare than most Ferraris.

The most expensive one on Autotrader.com right now is $110K.

If I could afford to buy one myself then I'd spend the 6k required for the GTR specific diagnostic system.

The main thing that makes the GTR difficult to service is the electronic calibrations that are needed/recommended at various intervals.

The standard mechanical servicing is nothing overly specialist.

...and here is the info decoded from the VIN number

So, I'd say, yes, genuine GT500?

Camaro all the way. The Analogy I can use is it would be like dating the chick from Footloose. The Porsche would be like dating your Accountant. The Ferrari would be like Dating Mariah Carey Great craic until you have to get your wallet out

Hawaii 5-0 sold me on a Silver Camaro, and the Camaro website did the rest, interior seems like a very nice place to be.

To go back to your original post... did you look at the new (2012+) list price or just cherry pick that oddball 2008 used example? Cos it looks like you are trying to invent a story here as a brand new Shelby GT500 has a $54k base list price, clearly something doesnt add up when you start talking about $100k+ 2008 Mustangs.

2012 Shelby GT500 base price is $54k. (Zip code 90210 for following link)
    http://bp3.ford.com/2013-Ford-Mustang?branding=1&lang=en#/Exterior/Config[|Ford|Mustang|2013|1|1.|820A.P8J.....~YZKAA.44E.SB.COU.GTS.]

    Used GT500, 2008, guideline is $33k !
    http://www.motortrend.com/used_cars/11/ford/shelby_gt500/pricing/
Real world example from the same site you used (Autotrader): http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?endYear=2013&zip=66044&keywords=gt500&listingType=used&engineCode=8+Cylinder&keywordsfyc=gt500&modelCode1=MUST&sortBy=derivedpriceASC&makeCode1=FORD&startYear=2008&showcaseOwnerId=68345&bodyStyles=COUPE&searchRadius=0&listingId=325970925&Log=0

    More and cheaper again: http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used-Ford-Shelby-GT500-d924

2012 Camaro ZL1 is also around $54k base
    http://www.chevrolet.com/camaro-performance-cars.html

Then there are the Boss 302 Mustang and Camaro SS that come in around $40k which deliver about 80% of the above top models performance. You either did a spectacularly poor job searching or a very deceptive one!

I went to a popular car buying site, entered "Ford", "Mustang", "any distance" and "GT500". Those are the ones that came up. I have better things to do than "invent stories".
