RTE website is not available. Redirecting to olympics.rte.ie to show boxing with no option to go to the homepage.

Do they think people are that thick they can't find a link to boxing from the homepage.

Nope. It's called not annoying even more people like yourself by dedicating all resources to the stream instead of the entire RTE site, so people don't complain about the stream breaking up.

Follow Jonathan Lundberg at RTE on Twitter, he's a nice fellow who cuts the ---- and gives direct stats on their streams. (It's in the high Gbps)

Very unprofessional of the national broadcaster.

What should they have done? Just let the stream fall to bits?

They had to restrict access to the main site. They were pushing ~30Gbps for Katie's fight.

How about spend money on resources to cater for things like this. They are so amateur.

Amateur? LOL. You should see the antics on some foreign broadcasts, let alone their websites!

That is the problem. People cannot see past the BBC.

BBC have a massive website and streamed 25 live HD streams. RTE simply had to keep their website up while people streamed an event. Simples. Not a lot to expect from the national broadcaster to set up a Content Distribution Network with enough bandwidth.

The story, or so I believe, was that during her semi-final fight, RTÉ's website was so deluged with hits that the streams broke down, for which they received some criticism online. They closed the remainder of the website during her gold medal fight in order to ensure a repetition didn't happen.

Really a case of "dammed if they do and dammed if they don't". You also have to look at the fact that RTÉ would be criticized if they spent public money on capacity far in excess of what they usually needed for an event that happens only once every four years.

    They broadcast on enough platforms.

The BBC also have €5.4Billion to play around with ever year compared with the €350m RTE have.
