Hoping someone can reassure me here. This evening I tried to purchase a pair of shorts from Evanscycles.co.uk for €64 but it said the payment failed. I then tried again using the exact same details but it failed again.
I happened to check my bank balance a few minutes later and €128 had been taken from my account.

What do I do?? There is no record of me making any purchase on their site. I used my Irish laser card (maestro) which has worked perfectly on other UK sites like Amazon and Chain Reaction.

Primarily I just want someone on here to confirm that evans cycles is reputable and not a scam -the website seemed completely legitimate to me. Has anyone heard of this happening before?

They're a reputable site. A lot of people on here will have dealt with them as they had a price guarantee on the Garmin Edge 500 taken advantage of last year. No one had any issues from what I heard. Just give them a call and explain what happened.

They're a good, well-established site with stores in the UK. You'll get your money back, don't worry about it. This happens all the time, although I'm not familiar with the recovery procedure - you may have some to-ing and fro-ing between your bank and Evan's.

By right, your Laser card shouldn't work on any website that doesn't accept Laser, despite the fact that they accept Maestro.

I've used them before as well OP. As others have said, give them a call and they should rectify the problem.

They made a mistake with my card 2 years ago but as soon as I rang them they apologised and sorted it out, do it quick though.

Called them this morning, the best they could do was say that the money "might bounce back into your account in 3-5 working days".

Thankfully they do have a record of receiving payment.
