What shape A3 is it ?

When you say the wiper has stopped working do you mean the spray function or the actual wiper?

The sound you are hearing from the engine bay is the probably the pump on the washer bottle, and the reason the water isn't spraying is because the pipe has split going to the rear wiper, most likely inside the boot door but also could be in the roof lining near the door.

I would get it looked at ASAP as every time you engage it and hear that humming from the engine bay you are spraying lots of water somewhere it's not meant to be and it can start playing havoc with your boot lock and thus the alarm.

no liquid coming out of the wiper and the wiper is also not working (not moving)...
a kid hit the back of my car (thought it was just bumper) with a soccer ball the other day - not sure if connected or not - no mark on car but wiper not working now...
so liquid is going somewhere inside car - not good. not a diy job I'm guessing?
    A3 sportback 5 door.

is this a main dealer job or something that could be sorted by a multi-brand mechanic?

If you are confident enough then why not take of the trim on the inside of the boot lid and have a look,im sure there are loads of DIY guides on the net.

I fixed the pipe on a golf i used to have with a small brass pipe,a new section of rubber pipe and some tape. - worked a treat.

Of course if the wiper itself is not working i would start easy and check the fuses.

Is it possible that the spray function hasn't been working for some time but you only noticed it wasn't working when the wiper stopped working too perhaps.

that's possible I guess - don't really know to be honest. cheers for pointers. water going somewhere it shouldn't could have blown the fuse maybe?

on my A3 water won't spray out from the rear wiper, could it be blocked with dirt?

I couldn't tell you to be honest, check the fuse and see anyway.

I doubt it,i would be almost certain the pipe has split or burst somewhere, the probability of this is greater if it's the 8L A3.
