Audi multitronic vs regular auto box

    Folks,
we'll be changing the family car in the next little while and the usual suspects are there (Passat, Mondeo, Accord etc, around the €5k mark) and the A4/A6 is in the mix too.
I've seen various threads not in favour of the Audi multitronic box (car must be auto). My questions are:

do all Audi auto's have the multitronic set-up, or are there regular Audi automatics which have a more reliable reputation?

if so, can you physically tell one is a regular auto, and one a multitronic?

Is the multitronic only on certain models?

    thanks

Tbh, I changed car lately, and wanted an Audi, but could not find a 'conventional' auto, only Multitronic's........and, knowing someone who's 09 A6 has eaten its box, at 44k kms, I declined.....and bought a Saab 9-5 with a 'conventional ' torque converter auto instead.

Even trawling the ads, too many had references to work having been done on the Multitronic boxes.....

Now, a DSG / S-Tronic box Audi I'd have in a heartbeat. Had one in a VW before.

We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Multitronic / CVT is horrible - it makes the car totally characterless, you'd have to hate cars to have it.

    thanks for the replies folks.

At a glance our budget would probably bring the 06 model A4 into scope, but i don't think we could stretch to the S-tronic or DSG variants.
Are there any visual clues/badging/owner manual refs to spot a multitronic ?
'tis odd that Audi didn't offer a regular TC auto as galwaytt says, but i guess if there offering a CVT, why would they have an option of types of autobox
