M1 Drivers

I've driven on all the motorways in Ireland, some more frequently than others (M1, M4, M7, M50). Only in the last year have I been on the M1 every day and I've noticed that it is the worst for overtaking lane hoggers and generally poor driving overall. I've often been in the overtaking lane and come across a queue of 20+ cars all following 1 idiot doing 90/100 KPH and the driving lane pretty much empty the whole way. It leads to a lot of undertaking. Has anyone else noticed this trend on the M1, particularly from Drogheda to the M50 and vice versa!!

This happens everywhere, undertaking compounds the problem

It does happen everywhere but it just seems to be worse on the M1. Undertaking isn't ideal but what do you do if you are doing 120KPH in the driving lane and come upon a queue of cars in the overtaking lane doing 100/110KPH? Do you sit at that speed in the driving lane behind the last car in the overtaking lane, do you go in to the overtaking lane and join that queue of idiots or do you just keep driving in the driving lane and undertake the whole lot of them?

Meh, overtake on the left. Only way to deal with a persistent road captain.

M1 is generally OK until you hit the Balbriggan -> Dublin stretch, where you constantly encounter people dawdling along in the overtaking lane.

M50 is far and away the worst motorway for people mis-using lanes.

Undetaking someone at 120MPH can't be safe

I agree. Pain in the ass every morning.

Although the M50 is bad, I don't find it quite as bad as the M1, possibly because of the 100KPH limit. There are too many idiots on the M1 doing 100/110 and holding everyone up. There are also more lanes on M50 so not as bad for getting past. And also, the amount of trucks that decide to overtake on the M1 and take a few minutes to actually get past and hold everyone up is painful too.

Yeah, there is something about the m1, mixture of people driving very slow and others racing, either trying to make belfast in an hour or heading southbound flying it for the airport.

Used to drive it everyday last year and some of the worst driving on it, i think the northies who have no fear of getting points add to the problem.

I drive M1 to Belfast and then M2 to Derry regular and the difference in behaviour north and south is huge. Down south the overtaking lanes are hogged even with commercials but up north they are in and out of the overtaking lane in a flash.

Better educated drivers up north, not even grounds for discussion on that!!
