    Hi

Am looking for a job in waitressing/retail or admin but every where they are looking for someone with some experience which i don't have. I have experience as an au pair but i guess that doesn't help.

Any suggestions to improving my employability ?

Do little courses like signlanguage, ECDL ect...

And volunteer every chance you get. Festivals and charities such as Samaratans are constantly looking for volunteers.

Signlanguage for waitressing/admin/retails. You must work for the old FAS suggesting bad courses for the sake of it.

OP, for waitressing maybe look at doing a food safety class or culinary class which may help your chances. In terms of admin, there are many office classes and the ECDL as mentioned is ok, although I am unsure of the significance of the ECDL course these days as its farily basic. For a retail jobs it difficult as many retail outlets are feeling the tough times we are in and thus arent employing many.

Work on your CV also to ensure each CV and cover letter (very important) is targeted for each job and company you apply to. Generic cover letters can be a disadvantage to your application.

See if you can get a JobBridge for a few months too - exploitative as this scheme can sometimes be, it also has its uses as an experience- CV-improver. Good luck with your search :)

Apply anyway: my first job in bartending and in retail were both with no prior experience but I got invited in for an interview and impressed the manager enough to get taken on for a trial and then hired. I remember asking the manager a year later why I'd been hired when I had no experience . The way he put "We can teach skills but we can't teach attitude"
