Hi anyone know why a car alarm would alarm for no reason when locked? I woke this morning to hear my car alarm on, I thought someone was breaking into my car. Anyway when I checked up on the car it was fine but the alarm would cut on and off every so offen when locked. Then when the alarm stopped I would open the car with the remote locking, the alarm would go off again and stop when I turned the car engine on. So now I can't lock my car without it alarming at some stage. Any ideas?

Car is 00 vw passat. Thanks

Many alarms will be triggered if, once set, you attempt to open the door with the key, resulting in having to put the key (coded or chipped) into the ignition, which tells the alarm system that all is well, and so, switch off the alarm. As some alarms are trigged by a draw on the battery, ie an interior light comes on upon opening the door, it might be no harm to check your battery, see if its running low or has a drain on it, which can cause the alarm to go off. Is it triggered by movement? Kids messing, passing traffic? Are all the windows fully closed, are all the doors actually locked, including the boot, is the bonnet sitting down securely? Check the simple stuff first before looking for an auto electrician.

I was thinking it could be the battery, and i heard that before that if the power source is cut or interrupted the alarm would go off. My car started ok four of five times today without issues. All four doors lock, never checked boot but will tomorrow. Bonnet is secured correctly. Not sure if something like dampness could effect it?

it could be anything, from the battery to an insect crawling over the sensor.. or even maybe a mouse in the car (it does happen)

or it could be a loose connection

Check the connections for sensors under the boot and bonnet, these have a way of getting a bit loose sometimes on older cars (more common in after market alarms though).
Then check the doors sensors etc until you find it, or not ;)
