Overheating BMW 316

I just tried driving my BMW 316 (01) and the engine heat indicator went to flashing red within minutes. I waited for it to cool down and topped up the water tank, and managed to get it home.

When I pour water into the tank, I can hear it hitting the ground under the car within a few seconds. When I look into the engine, I can see it spitting out of the pipe in the very centre of the pic.

The top part of the pipe seems to have come apart at the silver bracket. Is it just a case of reattaching the bottom half of the pipe to the top, or is this something bigger? If that is all it is, do I need a professional to do it or is it a simple job?

I had a similar problem six months ago - water was leaking, although at a much slower rate. The garage said the pipe going from the tank to the rad was split and replaced it, so I dont think it is related. I gave it a good drive yesterday and it was fine, though I did have a bump off an unseen speed bump which may have caused the pipe to pop out.

    Any help appreciated - thanks.

Jaysis those pics are tiny. Anyway, best bring it to a garage. And its coolant you need not just water. Its a common enough problem on these cars

They shrunk going from phone to pc to website... ill try again. Second time lucky hopefully...

I cant get more than 5 mins out of it so will have to call someone out. If needed ill have to, but Id rather save a call out charge if at all possible

has the pipe failed or just become loose?

Tha plasic hose connection/fittings on those engines are very prone to failing and causing issues like yours.

The bad news: those engines have very soft heads and if you have driven with no coolant and the temp in the red even once, there is pretty much a 0% chance of the head/head gasket being OK.
