Invigilators mistake

Had a repeat exam today and noticed 2 possible mistakes on it. Asked about the first and the matter was quickly cleared up as the lecturer was near by. Asked about the 2nd later (when I was sure it was a mistake) and was told that he couldn't check because the lecturer had left.

I just emailed the lecturer asking him and he informed me there was in fact a mistake and he should have been informed via telephone as he had left his number. The lecturer is saying that this question will now not be marked which seems fair enough on his part.

However I think I may really need the marks from that question to bring me up to a pass. It was one of the questions i knew fully and would have gotten the full 8% for it. I did my best to answer and showed the procedure you would use to answer it (it was a maths question).

Is there anyone official (other than my lecturer) I could talk to about this as it seems very unfair I should be punished for an invigilators laziness?

I had the same exam, Complex Analysis(judging by your other posts). Was the mistake on the harmonic conjugate question? I think maybe there was another one as well, I think something to do with an analytic function, but I can't remember exactly. Which mistake did the lecturer correct for you? They should have made an announcement to tell everyone else(or maybe they did and I didn't notice).

Yeah, it was the harmonic function. It should have being something like u=3x^2y +y^3 but it was y^2 at the end. He said it won't be marked but that was def one of the easier questions on it and since I pointed it out to the invigilator and he could have done something but didn't it's really annoying

I agree it was one of the easier question. I did the same as you and just did out the procedure even though there was a mistake. I found the paper pretty difficult overall, so I'm not sure I'll pass if they don't mark that question. I'm in the same position as you basically.

Have you contacted the lecturer saying you want it marked?

Kind of, I told him in my reply that I did the question out as best I could, but the thing is it wasn't possible to complete the question given the typo.

Still I might email him again and make it clear that I would like it marked.

Don't lose sleep over it, IsThisIt. The lecturer will probably choose whichever option suits the student better. It's by far the easiest option for them.

I'm surprised that the spotted mistake wasn't announced though...

This relieves me a lot. I was wondering why I couldn't get it.

I'm the same OP, need that question to have a hope if passing. Was it Javier that was there?

No, Javier was there at the very start but left. Kevin Jennings was there and I asked him about one part but he was gone as well by the time I copped the Harmonic question was a mistake. I must have spent a good 40 min on it, wondering why I couldn't get it out!

There would be no harm in contacting the Education officer in the Students Union. He would be the best person to advise you. su.education@nuigalway.ie
