    Hi
My partner and I are moving to Dundee, both of us will be working and attending the University of Dundee.
Its all happened very quickly and so we don't have much information about the place! What is it like?
Has anybody any info about getting accommodation, don't want to spend a fortune but still want to live in a decent area!
Any other general info about socialising, travel etc would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks a million

It's quite studenty from what I know. I've heard that the cost of living is quite low as well.
For accommodation, I'd use spareroom and gumtree.

I will always have a soft spot for Dundee. MrsTeal went to Abertay for 4 years so I was over every 2-3 weeks or so when I was living in Dublin.

As a quick look at google maps will tell you Dundee Uni is between the Perth road and Hawkhill so if you can find accommodation around these areas, you'll be laughing. Some of the buildings are very old so give them a good looking over before you commit to move in. I can't really provide any good accommodation links as herself was lucky enough to live with friends (up beside Tannadice, not really recommended) so we never had to go in search of a place to live.

Dundee is a pure student town* and it's nightlife reflects this. There are loads of pubs and both Uni's SUs are pretty savage. There's only really one or two clubs with the main one being Fat Sams - if you're into that sort of thing. There's some live music venue place beside fat sams now too but i can't remember the name. It's a tiny city so all these places are within walking distance (heels permitting).

The cost of living is unreal. The difference in price of groceries to Ireland is very pleasant, same for the demon drink, i can recall buying pints of tennants for £1.83 - i'm sure that's increased since. Getting to Dundee was my annoyance and I don't miss that trek. The nearest airport is Edinburgh and it's about a 45min-1hr train (bus is cheaper but longer) from there.

I hope that info is helpful (and coherent, my brain is a bit fried after being glued to a computer all day) and if you've more questions feel free ask

*the place empties when term time is over to just leave the locals, a lot of whom are rough. . .and i'm from dublin 12

I was in uni in Dundee for 3 years and loved it. It looks like you are wanting a more mature area, so I would suggest Perth Road or towards Magdelan Green. I have heard good and bad things about the accommodation down by the dock road, but the apartments there do have a more mature vibe about them.

I stayed in student apartments for 2 years and the place I moved into for the last year was a kip.

For travel, cheap flights from Dublin to Edinburgh (assuming that you are from Athlone it should be easy enough, I think the Shannon route has still stopped), take the bus then from Edinburgh Airport, go every 15 mins and take about 30 mins to either Waverly or Haymarket and the train goes to Dundee like every hour from there (over an hour on the train to Dundee as well).

The locals have their own social problems, you would see a good few dodgy characters, but I wasn't bothered by them and met a lot of friends through the rugby there, so was happy out and would move back in an instant.

Dundee! Jesus just look up Frankie Boyle on youtube.

I lived in Perth and worked in Dundee - for the love of God don't live in Perth. I remember talking to the local Vicar from Glasgow - been living in Perth for 21 years. The locals had just begun to accept him - cliquey would be the polite way of saying it.

Dundee is a great place but it's rough as hell. Once you're okay with that it's great craic.
