Hey all, I've cleared this with the mods here.

We have been working on adding a stand-alone Framing & Forestry category on adverts.ie recently and we are almost ready to go but before we do so, I need your help please.

While it will be a stand-alone category, there is scope for quite a few sub-categories and I'm just trying to get an idea of what you would like to see there. Feel free to throw all suggestions at me and I'll see what I can do.

    Many thanks

    Eddie

    Beef Cattle
    Dairy cattle
    Sheep
    Other Livestock

    Tractors
    Farm machinery and tools
    Farm produce

I would imagine these would cover most things but I could have forgotten something. Someone else may be able to help you with the forestry side of it.

Edit: Actually thinking about it on the cattle front it would be nice to have different sections for bulls, cows, heifers and bullocks, donedeal is lacking in that department due to everyone putting it in their adds to get more views and I find it quiet annoying.

I suggested a Farming and forestry Section to Eddie on boards.ie sister site adverts.ie a number of months ago and he has been bringing the idea to fruition over that time. We link a lot of ads from other websites here on farming and forestry, so why not link it to our sister site also.

Please feel free to add your opinions and ideas to this thread and I am sure that eddie will take as many of them on board as he can.

Myself and Rovi have also discussed the idea of having a thread specifically for regular F & F contributors to promote stuff that they might have on sale on adverts.ie as an added incentive for regular posters only. Whether we sticky this thread or not will depend on your views?

A land to let section would be very usefull to. Think there is an opening there.

    A Pedigree Section.
Maybe different sections for cattle or sheep or both in the same section.

    Also an Arable section.
To please the lads with the big tractors!

Just in case people aren't aware, there is an Adverts App available free from the android store. I use it all the time and prefer the App to looking it up on the laptop/PC.

Speaking as a board's contributor and not as a mod, I'd like to think that having a Farming and Forestry section in adverts.ie might be conservative with the various sections as opposed to having a sh1t load of sections.

The more sections, the more confusion. If we had all of the sections that are suggested below, there would be beef cattle in the dairy section, non pedigree cattle in the pedigree section, hay in the other livestock section.

I'd prefer to see a few general sections up and running first such as:
    Machinery
    Tractors
    Other Farming
    Livestock
    Services

Then, if there is demand for it, following a trial period, allow some of the sections to split - such as Livestock into Beef, Dairy, Sheep.

There is already quite a good search facility on adverts. I think that adding too many sections may confuse some people and may make some of the users frustrated.

Just my 2 cents. You may not agree with me?

Ya you are right there until it takes off reilig about not having too many sections. If the sections could be listed in a way that you could click livestock and view all livestock and then still have the option to pick seperate category's within livestock without having to start afresh it would probably work better, Donedeal is ruined from people using loads of keywords and feckin up searches and this might get around it if the person placing the ad had to choose the kind of animal from a drop down menu.

What's most interesting about this thread is, that it is obvious from those who have tried, there's more than one way to skin this cat. And how you do it depends on the sector you are most interested in. This categorisation of farming, farming products, farming tools/plant/machinery has been an exercise for me for the last few months. I can understand the OP's desire for a clear answer - It seems there isn't one. However, whatever you come up with, in terms of enabling farmers who are doing a search for something they specifically want (for example, and AA bull with herdplus data, location details and price per head), and allowing those who have products or services for sale to reach their target audience, you will be ahead of the game compared to the most popular on-line venue of today. Hopefully the work I have done in this will bear fruit, and I hope to show it off in the ploughing match in New Ross this year.

Thanks for all the input here guys. I'm compiling a list of sub-categories here based on what has been suggested so far and I'm doing an FAQ as well. If anybody has anything else to add, feel free.

    Hi all,

We are up and running now with more sub categories to come - http://www.adverts.ie/for-sale/farming/582

As we have never allowed animals on adverts before we are making an exemption for livestock and to start us of, we are defining livestock as cattle, sheep and pigs for now. We will review all this as and when we have more content.
Any issues, please let me know.

    Thanks

I think there's too many categories under tractors and trailers.

The sad fact of classified ads in this country is that Irish people are idiots.

Nothing will be in the right place, or be properly photographed, described or priced.

The less categories you have the better imho.

+1, reminds me of farm and plant, very vexing to use. All tractors could be under one category I think and put in a search function if someone wants to narrow down their search.

For the machinery categories I would have 3 headings.
    • Tractors
    • Trailers
    • Farm machinery and tools

In the livestock category it might be no harm to put in an ''other livestock'' heading aswell to cater for goats and poultry and whatever else may be out there. Most farmers wouldnt be the most tech savvy so the simplier you could keep it as Johnboy says the more likely it is to be a success. The headings for the tractors are very similar to the farm and plant website and it was impossible to find what your looking for on it.

Sadly it's nothing to do with technology redz, things were as bad in the buy and sell days too.

Irish people seem to have an inability to sell stuff properly, we're slowly getting better, but it seems to be part of our culture to treat potential buyers/customers with disdain.

Thanks guys. Don't forget that we move a lot of ads on a daily basis and this seems to work in letting people know that there is a correct category for something.
