    Hi there

I want to buy my husband a good camera for christmas/birthday but I don't know where to start - Im looking to spend no more than €600 initially although I know that he will have to add more as he goes along for lenses and other bits.

Im completely new to this and was just wondering if anyone could recommend a good camera for this price region?

    Thanks in advance
    Laura

Depends on how into photography he is and how he feels about having a bigger camera around his neck(dslr's are not for everybody)

There are quiet a few different types around and for that budget you will pick up something very nice. Here are a few different types:

Digital Slr: bigger of the cameras with interchangeable lens. Probably the most versatile in the fact that all your settings can be manually adjusted and the range of lens etc make the camera capable of taking any type of picture, plus you can build on the lens collection as the need arises and your talent increases. These cameras can be left in automatic mode and used with the kit lens ( the lens that comes with the camera which is quiet a decent lens on the canon and Nikon kits) and some excellent results can be achieved. The downside is that not everyone likes the bulkiness of some of these camera. For your budget you will pick up a nice Canon or Nikon but there are others so worth a look at a few and see which ones feel right in your hand. Canon and Nikon are the main players and some people will be canon people and others Nikon.

Bridge camera: like a dslr camera but with a fixed lens, most settings can be changed to give various results. You are limited though as the lens cannot be changed. But they tend to be smaller and lighter than the camera mentioned above.

A micro four thirds camera: like a dslr camera but smaller, these cameras have really come on and are an excellent alternatives for the bigger dslr camera. They give excellent results, have interchangeable lens etc. there are some cracking cameras in this range such as the Sony Nex 5, Panasonic Lumix, Nikon 1.

    Thank you for your reply.

He is justa beginner too but loves taking photo's and would do it alot more if we had better than the standard family digital camera.
I really just want it so that we can get some really nice phot's of the children, although he may also want to take some landscape photo's on holidays etc.

I don't think he would mind the bulkiness of it but it probably does make more sense to have something a little more lightweight such as the micro four thirds camera. I like that they are more compact and that the lenses can be changed.

Thanks for your help. I will have a look at the four thirds camera's you mentioned and see if any of these will be suitable.
