Newcastle West is shaping up to be the place to be this September. Despite the weather, the town is making final preparations for their end of summer highlight, The Knights of Westfest Festival. Building on the success of 2011, the festival will retain the five night format centred in the picturesque Market Square with the backdrop of The Desmond Castle.

The festival opens on Wednesday 12th September with a Fashion/Business Showcase in The Courtenay Lodge Hotel, with exhibitions from local restaurants, businesses and boutiques etc.

The music acts begin on Thursday 13th Sept with one of Ireland’s leading cover bands Bluemoose who take to the Main Stage in The Square. On Friday 14th, the ten participants in the revived Knights of Desmond contest will be interviewed on stage by Hector O’hEochagain, followed by a performance from Fastest Accordion Player Michael O’ Brien & band.

The party continues on Saturday 15th with Popular Galway band, The Saw Doctors who will be headlining this year's Knights of Westfest.

A Gourmet Food Fair called Taste of Westfest has been added to the 5 day musical extravaganza on Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th September. Showcasing an extensive range of mouth-watering West Limerick produce, visitors will be able to meet first class artisan producers and see well known chefs demonstrate their culinary skills whilst sharing their expertise.

A Family Fun Day will kick off at the GAA grounds from 2pm on Sunday 16th with Bouncy Castles, Fun Races for Kids and Adults. Some new features to the festival will be a Teddy Bears Picnic and a Reptile Zoo.

Sunday also sees the return of the All Ireland Donkey Derby that attracted a crowd of over 5,000 last year. Richie Kavanagh, Irelands’ No.1 Comedy Singer and Songwriter will launch this year’s Donkey Derby which will be held in The Coursing Field on the Demesne Grounds and will entertain the crowd with many of his hit singles including “Aon Focal Eile” & “Mickey’s Buckin Ass”.

And if that isn’t enough, on Sunday evening after the announcement of “The Knight of Desmond”, Newcastle West is delighted to welcome for the first time the extremely talented group The High Kings to provide very entertaining foot-tapping rousing ballads which will be followed by a fireworks display to wrap up the weekend.
