Skype interview

Just wondering about any etiquette for a Skype interview as I have one tomorrow.

Should I dress like I would for a face-to-face interview?

My apartment doesn't have a proper common area so I'll be sitting on the bed in my room when I do the interview. Is this good or bad?

I can't think of any other questions about it right now. Any other tips for it?

Can you not sit at the kitchen table with a neural background?

I'd dress formally for it to give a good impression. It's best to setup for the interview somewhere with a neutral background and fairly consistent lighting so you look good at the far end. Skype a friend beforehand to test that it looks fine.

Finally (and importantly) remember to ask your house mates not to download or use the Internet heavily for the duration of the interview. The last thing you want is your connection falling apart.

Kitchen is tiny, not really an option.

Shirt and tie on top; naked from the waist down. :)

Just kidding. Treat it like a normal interview.

Assuming it is not simply a voice only interview, your background should be uncluttered. I would consider rearranging your bed so you can be sitting at a table with a plain background behind you. Like it or not they will be judging you visually.

Also make sure you have credit on your phone. That way if the quality of the skype call is bad you can backup to the phone.

I felt like it went well. I had to sit on my bed in the end and just had the webcam pointed at my torso and head with my wardrobe in the background. The guy on the other end was just wearing an open-collar shirt, I was a shirt and a jumper so I felt like I was better dressed than him. No problems with the connection either so I think it was grand, thanks for the tips.

    hey,

just to give my two cents on this (I realise it's now over, but just to give more information on the topic)

I had one once over Skype. It went very well. I dressed very formally from waist up, and then had my fat man pants on below. I had mine on my bed (don't have a headboard so it was just a white wall in the background), and I had the light facing my face so they could see me better.

A tip to people doing this would be to either test call a friend first to see how you'd look or to open up your webcam software/ photobooth to see how you'd look. It's a fairly awkward practice, but it seems to becoming more and more regular these days.

    Ross
