Music recorder handheld

I used to have a Sony tape-recorder that I'd bring to gigs to record a band I was about to join and it was great because the playback volume was reasonable.
Today there are many digital music recorders but are there any portable ones with a decent built-in speaker to give me enough sound quality and volume to play my bass along with when learning new stuff?
I have no interest in playback via headphones, only in the units own speaker.

What about the option of using a portable recorder and running small but decent computer speakers off it?

I'm guessing that any unit with an amp and speakers decent enough for you to play along with is no longer going to be that portable.

It's not directly a situation I've encountered but do quite a lot of field recording with a recorder so the emphasis would be on record quality and portability.

I'd go with what Old Gregg said - your best bet is to buy a Zoom or an Edirol (or equivalent quality recorder) off Adverts as they often go for very decent prices, then get a cheap 'n' cheerful pair of computer speakers too. The quality of even the onboard microphones on the zoom and edirol are pretty decent for your intentions. The Zoom recorders have TRS inputs and can work as a basic audio interface, so you should get good value out of it :)
