You have to take the rough with the smooth, if its break even then its not too bad considering the way things have panned out, surely you saved a good lump of the dosh you guys made last year from milk?

if only so, that money was used to pay back for the bad year of 09

the real issues will take hold later in the year, when the effects of the summer show them selves, forage quality/quantity and the cost of supplementation.
and the fertility results that we will start to see from sept on.

All part of the risks that one takes when farming. Next year will be better.

I don't. My English teacher told me in school that if I wanted to be a farmer, I would have to be "physically strong and mentally tough". I agree......

One can easily spend money in dairy farming, we are told milk output will increase substantially, dairy farmers don't have a lot of money because as I know myself, there ios always room to improve things and nothing comes cheap.
It is all well and good talking about good prices for cull cows and calves but loans have to be paid and there is always more money needed to invest - especially with the end of quotas in sight.

But, but, but beef farmers have loans too.

Same as everything that gets over supplied - price drops through the floor.

After having a quick read of the two page spread in the journal today about winter milk in Ireland, and how we need to be paid 40cent/l to breakeven and earn the average industrial wage, I hope to god the price start to pick back up very soon!

in all fairness the Journal isn't much to go by especially when they are on about break-even prices. Skewed for the readers eyes

The journal! ( Hello mag for notional farmers) You can't believe anything written in it, even the date on it is not correct!

Shocker. And the fact that the launch party for the €200 million white elephant is tomorrow is a complete coincidence. According to the straws in the wind they are planning to buy us off with around €10,000 each of our own money. And they are going to take another €10,000 each from us to fund the white elephant, not including the 2cpl deduction for the following 5 years.

2cpl for a 6400litre cow is over 400kgs of meal/cow which would produce a lot of milk away from the peak period if we were interested, with the big advantage that it could be turned off when low milk prices hit. Imagine another '09 with the perfect weather and price storm then throw in a 2cpl levy which will increase if you don't meet your contracted supply.

Notice the way they announced the last 2 increases early in the month... I presume to get farmers to push on cows.
