    Hi All,

I'm planning on buying a car since Dublin Bus got the better of me !!

I'm a medical student who wants a decent car for daily commuting and some trips during the weekend.

Also, I'm still 21 , so you guessed it the insurance is going to be a pain in the neck with topping it off by having an international license !

something reliable , economic and trendy would be ideal.

I was thinking of (Yaris) as the road tax and insurance is the cheapest I assume but reviews have made me a Little bit reluctant about going forward. not to forget to mention that my budget is around 4000-5000 Euros.

I'd really appreciate your input guys :)

Hi med22, welcome to boards. I've removed the formatting from your post, as it made it difficult to read.

Something small with a non powerful engine would have lowest insurance. Vis a vis your licence, have you been in Ireland more than 12 months? If you have (or once you are) you won't be eligible to drive in Ireland unless it's and EU/EEA licence or from one of a list of countries (mostly right hand drive ones like Australia, New Zealand etc). I don't think there's any exception for students (unlike say for the car importation rules).

Start with insurance companies , and a good broker like first Ireland might smooth things over considerably at no extra cost to you ..firstireland.ie by phone would be a good start.

Yaris is a no brainer but I wouldn't describe it as trendy.

The Suzuki Swift would be more trendy and still would be reliable enough.

The Renault Clio is a nice little car too.

My young lad just bought a Hyundai Getz. He's well happy with it. I was surprised with how big it is inside and it's full of extras such as 4 x electric windows, electric sunroof, split/reclining rear seats etc. When I was test driving cars with him, I was surprised how noisy the Yaris is

Trendy and Yaris do not go together... Plus it ain't easy on the juice at high speeds.

How high up the tax bracket do you want to go?

I'd recommend a Fiesta as a 1st car, insurance friendly and much more trendy than a yaris ;)

Thanks everyone for your answers :)

I never thought that you can't drive with an international license if you have been in Ireland more than a year ?!! as my friend has been in the country since 2009 and bought a car last year with his international license !! I know that it's only allowed for a max of 1 year to drive with it .

I'm kinda staring to discard Yaris as an option and now thinking about the Suzuki Swift as it looks nice. Don't know though about fuel economy ?! does anyone know how much would the insurance cost for 21 years male ?

@dgt , my insurance budget would be around (1000-1500 ).

    once again, thanks all

Insurance varies quite a bit depending on where you live. Ring an Insurance company.

Also experiment with putting a woman on the policy as a named driver.....

Put your mother or sister as named driver on the car and it should bring the premium down a bit as only one person can drive the car at a time and us men are high risk because we can drive properly ( stirs pot)

    s all

No one checks your licence when you buy a car although the insurer will generally ask what type of licence you hold. Does your friend have an EU/EEA licence? There is no time limit applicableo those (in practical terms).

Otherwise, it's 12 months from arrival in the country not 12 months from starting to drive here.

Heh heh heh the woman bit :pac::pac::pac:

@ med22 I meant the tax of the car, how high are you willing to pay per year on motor tax?

I bought cars when I wasn't even old enough to have a licence and got them registered to me no problem
