Terrell Owens was looking to return to the NFL. The Seahawks were looking for a big-play wide receiver.  Owens agreed to contract terms Monday night.

The 6-foot-3, 224-pound Owens had a tryout for the coaches earlier in the day, and reportedly ran the 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds. Considering that Owens is 38 and sat out last season after having knee surgery, that’s fast no matter whose thumb was manning the stopwatch.

Part of the Seahawks’ interest in Owens is the fact that they’re still looking for a bigger receiver to replace split end Mike Williams, the team’s leading receiver in 2010 who was released last month. Part of the intrigue is Owens’ past production, which includes 12 seasons with at least 60 receptions, nine seasons with at 1,000 receiving yards and eight seasons with double-digit touchdown catches.

The sum of his 15 NFL seasons is staggering: 1,078 receptions; 15,934 receiving yards, which ranks second all-time behind Jerry Rice (22,895); 153 TD catches, which ties for second all-time with Randy Moss, again behind the incomparable Rice (197).

A third-round draft choice by the San Francisco 49ers in 1996, Owens caught 97 passes for 1,451 yards and 13 TDs in 2000; 93 passes for 1,412 yards and 16 TDs in 2001; and 100 passes for 1,300 yards and 13 TDs in 2002. He played for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2004 and 2005, catching 77 passes for 1,200 yards and 14 TDs the first season. Then it was on to the Dallas Cowboys for three seasons, as he caught 85 passes for 1,180 yards and 13 TDs in 2006 and 81 passes for 1,355 yards and 15 TDs in 2007.

Owens played one season each with the Buffalo Bills (2009) and Cincinnati Bengals (2010), catching 72 passes for 983 yards and nine touchdowns the last time he was in the league. While that was below average for the prolific Owens, the only receivers in Seahawks history to match those kinds of numbers in a single season are Hall of Famer Steve Largent (1981, 1983 and 1984) and Joey Galloway (1997).

As productive as Owens has been, at times his off-field and even on-field behavior has overshadowed what he brings to an offense. He comes to the Seahawks with the understanding that his focus needs to be on football.

The Seahawks had limited exposure to Owens at his other five stops in the NFL, as he caught 23 passes for 300 yards and three TDs in five games against Seattle.

But that’s all about to change.

Edwards and Owens in the same locker room, dear god.

from @adbrandt "Seahawks' deal w/TO is one year at $925,000. He'll make a $65,000 bonus if he makes the final 53-man roster. No other bonus $."

Very happy to hear this news, he's a fella who's life has been football and it would have been a shame for his NFL career to have ended on an injury.
Whether he makes the 53man roster or not its nice to see him getting a chance

I honestly see him making the cut as lets face it a 4.4 40 at his age shows he is still in shape and he wouldn't have lost much of his technique either and its all fixable.

I only hope he might have learned to manage his finances better, because it certainly is the last chance saloon for him.

Its not about production, its about the locker room presence. The QB is the leader of the offense and those guys will think they are which is a huge problem when you have a guy who is new to the role of starter.

  • little bit off topic but what do ye think of to and randy moss as first ballot hof'ers in my opinion under normal circumstances there both in but there are reasons for the voters to keep them out for a year or 2 ie

for moss:when he wanted to be i think he was the biggest deep threat in nfl history and by the sounds of it he was a great teammate never a problem in the locker room like someone else well get to however he didnt just take plays off he took entire seasons off i think if he kept his mind in the game he would have beaten jerry rices records and although he couldnt run any other rout nearly as good as rice he was just sooooooo good at the streak that he didnt have to.

for to: polar opposite to moss one of the hardest workers you will ever come across he learned his work ethic off of rice himself and he was open on the vast majority of his plays, although he didnt have quite the same deep threat as moss (nobody did) he could run pretty much any route you asked him to perfection and he was like a rb once he got the ball in his hands on top of that he kept himself in supreme shape.
the problem with to as we all know is that he is a cancer in the locker room the likes of which we've possibly never seen in any sport before. it was to the extent that by cutting him a hof player the cowboys got better im an eagles fan so i know only to well what an ass he can be.

2 incredible players but theres reasons there for people to claim neither deserve a hof spot.

    what are yere thoughts

If its found they broke the 3 day rule tut tut Pete Carroll and Seattle

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000048018/article/did-terrell-owens-seahawks-practice-break-nfl-rules?module=HP11_headline_stack
The Seattle Seahawks acted fast to get Terrell Owens involved in their offense.

The Seahawks' addition of Terrell Owens wasn't a publicity stunt. Bucky Brooks reports from training camp that the veteran could be a key contributor.

    But was it too fast?

That was the question posed by Fort Worth Star-Telegram beat writer Clarence Hill, who said eyebrows were raised around the clubhouse when Owens practiced with his new team Wednesday. Hill reached out to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello on Thursday to find out if the Seahawks violated NFL rules.

"Players have a 3-day acclimation period during the preseason," Aiello said. "Day 1 is for the physical and meetings. Day 2 and 3 the player may participate, but only in helmet and shells or a padded shirt. Day 4 and for the rest of camp is in full pads. The Cowboys are doing it correctly. Don't know about Seattle."

Owens signed with the Seahawks on Monday. On Wednesday, it was reported on the Seahawks' official website that the team practiced in full pads for two hours. Owens was part of that practice. Hmmmmm ...

The Seahawks got in some trouble for fudging with the OTA rules back in June. If they erred with Owens, coach Pete Carroll is in line for another firm slap on the wrist.

UPDATE: Aiello later said in an email to The Associated Press that the NFL was gathering facts about Owens' practice.

Wouldn't be the first time Pete Carroll broke rules, if this book is to be believed.

Can't see TO being much of a problem for Flynn, he'll either behave ala Bills-Bengals or he'll be gone. He has done the right things in the main in his last two season seasons and that's likely to continue.

Huge game for TO against Kansas on Friday night. Seahawks beat writers saying that there's a very good chance he gets cut. I hope not though, would love to see him make their roster.

I've only been around the NFL scene for the last year or so. When I was watching classic games and looking up players, trying to learn more about the game, TO always stood out for me. I have read about his history etc but purely from a selfish point of view I'd like to see him play a season so I could watch him live every week rather than on highlights. :)

    Has been cut.

Not too surprising I suppose, seeing as he's been rather disappointing in the preseason games so far.

    No surprise.
