My car has been laid up for the past year, after a few mins after starting it up hot water started coming out of the passenger side of the heater on to the floor well. The expantion tank went down a few inches. Can anyone help me figure out what is up and how do I get to the source of the problem. All help appreciated as I can't afford a garage at the moment.
    Thanks

Presumably the heater matrix up behind the dash is leaking. If your going to try to get at it yourself, what's your level of DIY knowhow?

Pretty good, the job sounds akward but I would have a go!

I wonder if the heater control valve could be faulty...common fault on these. Its directly behind the engine next to the bulkhead, usually manifests itself as engine overheating symptoms.....did the heater gauge go up at all?

Yes the temp did go up so I switched off as steam started to come out of the heater.I checked the expansion tank and that had gone down a good bit. I didn't think a duff control valve could cause that, could it. I am totally lost here so any help would be very much appreciated.

it did on both the ones i bought recently... symptoms like the head gasket having failed, lots of steam and gauge up in the red. but all it needed was a €20 valve...i wonder how many of these got scrapped by mistake!

To test if this is the case., take off the two pipes from the valve and join them... (isolating the heater) this will eliminate Head gasket trouble, but it could still be a faulty heater.

Thanks for the reply , at that price it's worth a try, but in the meantime I will figure out some way to join the two pipes together , maybe a short piece of copper pipe inserted into each pipe and two pipe clips??
Thanks for your help , much appreciated.
