Do you still need a BB phone to use these?

I've never had the need for one while using mine.

I bought a 64GB one a couple of months back, for about €330, off of amazon. I've been very happy with my purchase since, and would happily recommend one to anyone. They currently run playbook OS 2.0 (supposedly upgradable to Blackberry OS 10 whenever it finally gets released in 2013), which doesn't have anywhere near the same amount of apps as Android or iOS, but is a very pleasant os to use. I primarily use it for viewing the internet and watching videos, so that doesn't effect or bother me anyway.

I am VERY close to pulling the trigger on this... I keep telling myself i don't need it. NEED... .

I just want it, to play with, to mod, to tear down..

As for Android Apps.. ----> LINK ;)

    Also --> HERE

I think if i wake up in the morning, and this is still in my head, i'm going to buy it..

Surely the Nexus 7 tablet would be a better buy at this price point. It's in and around 200 and brand new tech.

I was waiting for someone to mention the Nexus.. :D

Have to agree.. (But aren't some people having issues with the nexus - looking for link)

    But it's still good(ish) at €187..

I can guarantee you'd regret it at that price. Seeing what else is out there for not much more.

If it was less than 150 then maybe I'd start to be swayed, but even still...

I think i convinced myself it was less then 150, because of the whole Euro/Pound thing..

I just have to keep telling myself €187 €187 €187...

It's nearly €200.. :( It is a nice tablet, and as mentioned, when BB OS 10 comes out, it might be worth it, but by then, this tablet will probably be less then €100, and there will be a lot better tech out then, unless they start to slow it down...

EDIT - Also, I don't want to buy the Nexus, until it's been out a while.

LINK (Six things we hate about the nexus)

Also a lot of complaints about the screen seperating and not responding well.

Just something to be aware of, RIM have the PlayBook fairly locked down when it comes to root access and the bootloader. I bought mine, mainly because I did find one for sale for ~€150, but also on the premises that I would get to hack it, that sort of thing. But since a certain 2.0 update (2.0.0.something, I don't know off the top of my head), nobody has been able to gain root access, or 'jailbreak' the tablet. And if there is one thing that RIM are good at, it's security, so I'm not holding out for this to change any time soon :p . Just something to bear in mind. The OS is somewhat more restrictive than Android (You can't change the keyboard or the notification noise), which is something I do miss in not using an android device.

However it's still a rock solid tablet, if you plan on mainly using it for Internet access. Flash works great on it, it's very snappy, and I've been running mine for weeks without a reboot, which is more than I can say about my experiences with Android.

I picked up one last Christmas when they were reduced also. Its a great tablet in general but if you have a BlackBerry phone then you can bridge both devices and really get to see all its features like sharing internet connection and viewing emails, BBM, memos, calender etc.

You can still mess around a little with the tablet, sideloading android apps.

Spec wise I think overall the Playbook is better then the nexus. It comes with front and rear facing cameras (3mp front and 5 mp rear). Both capable of recording at 1080p. It has a micro HDMI port so you can connect it straight up to your tv to watch or play games. It also has great speakers. Ok so it is a dual core processor rather than the quad core tegra but QNX is better optimised then Android OS is.

You're not going to get any tablets with HDMI ports for under 200 if not 300euro

Apologies for the question, but how do these compare to an iPad3 in terms of specs etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,144 ✭✭✭Ballyv24

Might be better value here? http://www.adverts.ie/for-sale/q_blackberry+playbook/

I bought a HP touchpad on adverts and have had no issue with it. But I guess its all luck

The ipad 3 is better but it's a year newer and 2-3 times more expensive. For me the PlayBook meets all my needs but it depends yours as to which device is better

May be worth asking Declan if Irish stores will have stock & price-match UK stores.

I am a complete novice when it comes to technology so, is there much difference between the 16GB and 32GB? I would be using it for internet, email etc. Nothing too taxing.

The storage difference would only come into play if you were using it for movies, photos, music etc.

No difference between the two other then the storage capacity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,468 ✭✭✭fergiesfolly

only difference is the size of the drive. 32 gb will obviously hold twice as much as the 16 gb. Other than that, they're identical. 16 gb will hold 20+ movies, if that helps.

    Now available from pcworld Ireland:
    http://www.pcworld.ie/action/searchsite/playbook
    16GB 179 euro
    32GB 209 euro

Cheaper then sterling conversion up north

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,381 ✭✭✭✭Allyall

Now the 64GB version is down to £129 in the UK. Which is probably why the Irish Curry's dropped the 32GB and 16GB prices. (They both still work out more expensive then the 64GB in the UK.)

    £129 (€163) 64GB Blackberry Playbook

Have the 16g version, got it on adverts, great little tablet well speced and great value second hand now as you can get them as good as new for around 130

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,794 ✭✭✭cookie1977

Why didn't you bring it back to where you bought it from? I got mine replaced by pcworld with no issues when I had a problem. I also had no problems setting it up either.

sure just pick the UK from the list, sure it's all the same thing really and won't make a difference to the running of it
