More than likely the knob isn't tightened onto the pot fully meaning as the pot stops turning when its at max volume the knob just slips around it.

Do you have skirted knobs like these? images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRKpvewA2zS44HPHiyAAGy7k533nUu3ovtTlRzQbMxHOC_1IUyZfQ

If so the inside of them can get worn down and slip around the shaft of the pot.

It's easily checked, just pop the knob off and have a look inside, you should see vertical grooves notched out on the inside, if these look worn just get another knob and replace it.

i think i know what you mean.... is there a click past max volume and it returns to zero volume and turning off your volume if you hit the knob while playing?

if you get what i'm saying then the pot will need to be replaced....

    three possibilities

1 the pot is screwed and it is jusst spinning round and round. I have NEVER heard of this actually happening. if it IS this, then replace the pot

2 the knob is slipping on the shaft. if its a split shaft, lift the knob off and use a knife to open the split a little so it'll grip the inside of the knob. if it's NOT a split shaft then put a very small strip of paper over the shaft and push it on again

3 the nut holding the pot in place has come loose. this is the 99/100 times reason. take off the knob. tighten the nut. replace the knob.

now you have... happened to me.. the wiper was just passing over the stop inside the pot... still have the busted pot lying around somewhere...
