dumb wifi questions

Is it possible to use a modern smartphone (Galaxy 3 etc.) as a wifi web browsing device, without needing any prepay or billpay subscription?

Also, can they be used to surf the web (again, via wifi) without requiring a SIM card?

Is carrier-free (aka. unlocked) device a factor in wifi browsing?

    /unsure/

    Any help appreciated.

These devices are so expensive because they have the phone capability attached. Buy a galaxy nexus 7 if you want a purely wifi device. It will cost less than half the price and will be better tailored to what you want.

We're likely getting a Galaxy 3 at work for software testing purposes, but will not be allowed use it for phone calls.

Now that I think of it, I am with prepay Vodafone myself (non-smartphone) ... would popping my SIM into the new smartphone work without any hitches?

Ah cool. As for the sim card if it is unlocked can't see any problem in it.
