Couple of questions, I downloaded a mod for my son and the last step was copying the files into the main minecraft folder, now the launcher wont run, hereare the steps below. If I have corruped the main files, is it just a matter of unnstalling and reinstalling?

Is there any easier way of installing mods or what have I done wrong?

    thanks

    1.Download and install ModLoader.

2.Go into your .minecraft/bin folder and open minecraft.jar with an archiving program like WinRAR.

3.Open YAH MOD with the same program.

4.Drag all the files from YAH MOD into minecraft.jar.

5.Make sure the META-INF folder is deleted in minecraft.jar.

    6.Run Minecraft!

Chances are you went wrong at one point , will the launcher not run at all , if not you'll have to reinstall , remember to always make a backup of the minecraft jar before you go messing with mods.

Unfortunately this is the only way to install mods , the developers are working on a modding api which will make it easier to install mods , but it's along way away

If you want to re-install Minecraft just click on the 'options' button when you go to log in and click 'force update'. Then as you log in it will download the original files again.

I'm only getting to grips with installing mods so I've had to do this a few times until I've managed to get it to work.
