History was made on Saturday night in Athlone when the towns top kickboxing Instructor and new IKF Promoter Aaron Mc Grath from the well respected Westside Kickboxing club, brought big time International Kickboxing to the town for the first time ever.
Mc Grath, who was recently crowned an Irish champion himself when he won the title by knockout at the Helix in Dublin just two weeks ago, took the brave step of promoting an Ireland V England International teaml event and also two major IKF Title fights.
The gamble paid off and Mc Grath filled the house with some 800 very vocal, very sporting and appreciative fight fans who screamed the house down in support of their fighters.
The main event was an IKF AM FCR Ladies 5 Nations Bantamweight Title between Galways Yvonne Mc Nevin and Englands Kay Summer and this was a cracking contest which went right down to the wire after a blistering five rounds which ended in victory for Yvonne.
Athlones Keith Hamilton fought for the IKF All Ireland Junior Lightweight Crown in another fantastic contest against Limericks Dan O Connor and the decision and the Title went to Hamilton on this occasion.
All credit to the Athlone supporters who cheered every fighter who entered the ring regardless of whether they were home or away and the venue was top class with tiered seating and a full bar facility and each fight had a stunning ring girl to keep all the red blooded males in the audience practicing their wolf whistles throughout the night.
Huge credit must go also to Dr. Maura Grummell (known throughout the IKF as the fight doctor) as she had an unfortunate accident en route to the show but still managed to turn up and oversee the event and the safety of all the fighters.
The main sponsor of the evening was the" Food Centre" based on the Tuam Road, Galway to which we are very grateful and of course to the many sponsors on the night without which a show of this calibre would not have been possible.
Indeed, the promoter Mr. Mc Grath would like to say a big thanks to the management & staff of AIT for the use of their wonderful facility, the medical staff on duty, the referees and judges, all the fighters and coaches from home and away, MC Mr. Alan Mc Nevin, the DJ, The International Kickboxing Federation and anyone else who helped make the night such a roaring success.
Anyone looking to take up kickboxing, K-1 or Muay Thai in the Athlone area should contact Aaron on 085 1328205.
