Yes balls it is..... or should i say ball bearings.

Have an ole mountain bike which very rough hubs so wanna replace the bearings and see if it helps, already tried cleaning and greasing them and they're still a bit rough, so can anyone tell me where i can get the ball bearings, had a look on wiggle and crc, halfords and cyclesuperstore but none seem to just sell the bearings on their own.

Any bicycle shop that does repairs will do bearings, hardly worth paying the postage to buy them online unless your buying hundreds of them. Usually a couple of euro at most and any good shop will throw them in with a larger purchase.

Rear hubs will be 1/4" and front will be 3/16" (unless you've fancy Campy record hubs).

    I have grade 25 1/4" ball bearings, (DA/Record quality)
can give you a set of 22 and fresh grease.
can meet in Dublin city or send it by post

If it's a cup and cone type bearing then check for wear or rust on the cone and the part of the hub where the bearings sit. If the cone is pitted or basically anything other than smooth then it needs to be replaced too. If the hub part is damaged then replacing the whole hub is the only alternative. You can use new bearings and cups in a worn hub but it'll never feel quite right and the bearings will wear out quicker.
Check with SJS for the exact parts you need as "similar" is unlikely to work.

    Best of luck.

Also, if it's a cup and cone bearing, it will almost certainly have a "caged" bearing. The only real purpose this serves is to make it easier to assemble at the factory.

Throw the cage away and replace with loose bearings. A front hub will usually take 11 (or 10 for older Raleigh) 3/16" ball bearings. Rear hubs usually use 9 x 1/4" ball bearings.

    Thanks for all the replies

I just took them out and gave them a quick cleaning, didn't really bother checking the cones :o

Thanks very much for the offer but this bike ain't worth much and i'd feel guilty wasting them nice record, dura ace quality bearings in it, anyway apparently they'd only do for the rear hub.

I only use the bike for work so think i'll just soldier on for the time being and when it gets too hard to push i'll drop the wheels into the LBS and get them done, hopefully the rest of the bike will last long enough
