So watching tonights Olympic coverage and after losing in the 1500m semi final one of 'Team GB's' runners, when interviewed said "after 2 years on the lash, to train for 8 - 12 months and make an Olympic Semi Final is a great result"

Now am I missing something or should I start hammering in laps of my local football pitch in an attempt to get an all expeses get a free holiday ot Rio in 2016?

Yea I thought that was a gas comment.

I don't get the second part of your comment though. The team GB guy is obviously pretty talented - are you that good?

There was an article in Runners World a few years ago where a guy tried to go from couch potato/bar stool to Olympic Qualification time for the Marathon.
Now he had been a fairly talented runner in college but was now in his early thirties and hadn't run for years.
The end result was he got down to around 2:35 but then started to suffer from major injuries ... so it might be possible if you had the talent and were prepared to put in a lot of work

I do remember watching a documentary about a guy who started almost from scratch, but planned to make the UK team. Can't remember his name though. Steve Way is another good example. Has gone from a smoking/coach-potato lifestyle to running sub 2:20 in London marathon, over the course of three years.
