    Hi all,
Would be great if someone can help me out. I took some photos today at a kids birthday party so when i put the SD card in my imac it was reading the card then it stopped reading. I then ejected the card and inserted again and I got the following message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer - options to Initialize / ignore / eject. I selected eject and if i insert again I get the same message. Can the data be recovered somehow?

Do you have a Windows machine you could try the SD card in?, also try using a dedicated card reader over the camera, sometimes these can be less problematic

Try removing the sd card, restart the iMac and reinsert the card.

    rebooted mac - same problem.

I put the card in the camera and it says Format, not looking good is it.

I might bang a mail to data recovery to see if they can help http://www.datarecovery.ie/camera_card.htm

    Cheers for your help.

A Windows machine with a similar issue should mount the device, try a Windows machine if you can, no idea about Macs. TestDisk is quite good at repairing corrupted partitions and PhotoRec for recovering the actual files

    Hi Nick,

I have a usb sd card reader. I connected to a windows machine.

No logs selected, then I select Intel/PC Partition, select analyse - Partition sector doesnt have the end mark 0xAA55

    Using test disk it picks up Disk /dev/sdb -1073 MB / 1024 MiB - CHS 130 255 63

options to Add Partition or Load backup ???

    Appreciate your help Nick.

Hi Dave, try PhotoRec, the SD card probably uses the FAT32 filesystem btw :) so choose that when asked. Make sure to copy the files onto the computer, not the actual SD Card obviously!

    Still no joy.
I select Disk /dev/sdb 1073MB /1024MiB usb card reader, does this mean there is 1073MB of data on the card?

Once I select the above I get

Partition Start End Size in Sectors
    > P Unknown 0 0 1 130 138 8 2097152

Filesystem type where the files were restored.

    [ ext2/ext3 ] ext2/ext3/ext4 filesystem
    [ other ] FAT/NTFS/HFS+/ReiserFS/...

I tried both and no files were found. the above doesn't mention FAT32 ? I take it FAT is FAT16 ???

    Cheers N

    Hi,
I have a usb card reader, got it in the deals shop in blanchardstown shopping centre for 1.49.

    Still not having any luck.

I'd be willing to post the SD card if someone could restore the data. If restored I'd pay for your services.
The files are .NEF (Nikons RAW file).

Have you tried loading the photos directly from the camera using a cable?

Try a different computer as well if you can before going down the format/partition route.

didn't try the cable as the camera reads FORMAT but i'll also try that.
I tried a windows laptop via usb card reader.

Will let you know how the camera usb cable goes.

Recuva may also be worth trying, how long does photorec stay at scanning the disk?

Get the following message from Recuva.

    Location is not available.

    F:\ is not accessible.

The volume does not contain a recognised file system.
Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted.

you can also try Easeus Partition Repair, no expierience with it myself but has worked for others and it is free, no harm in trying :) (You may need to use Recuva/PhotoREC after repairing the partition)

    Hi Nick,

I tried Easeus partition recovery, Easeus Data Recovery, Disk Digger.
They all scanned through the disk sector which resulted in 0 files found.

Can someone recommend a company that specialise in data recovery.

    Cheers for your help.

    try this ,http://www.z-a-recovery.com/
a free digital camera image recovery function is available
    quote,
Secondly, even its demo version recovers digital images from memory cards. This means that it is enough to have a demo version of ZAR at hand to recover lost (deleted) digital images from your digital camera. end quote

    try the demo version.
designed for windows xp,2000,2003 os,no mac version avaidable.

    Hi All,
I got it sorted from www.criticaldata.ie

The controller had failed so they had to take the chip out of the SD card to restore the data.

    Cheers for your help.
