You can use commercial vehicles every day so that won't be a problem.

Unless you have a registered company it will be very difficult for you to tax a crew cab as commercial though.

Unless you have a business and have a least 3 employees you won't be able to avail of the cheaper commercial road tax, and at that you can't use it for leisure purposes.
    Insrance should be ok.

Is there certain forms I need to fill to get the cheaper tax or is it if the gaurds catch me.

If you want cheaper tax, buy a car with a smaller engine, with a lower tax band.

Otherwise you are committing fraud with what you are suggesting. If want a big powerful vehicle for social, domestic and leisure, then you pay the appropriate tax. Sucks, but you have the choice.

A small car wont pull 5 men across a ploughed field. I need the crewcab for work in busy periods for work but still need it as a run around when theres no work.

Well if you are a registered business then you won't have a problem. However, because everyone at one stage was buying crew cabs and using them privately(myself included at one time), you now have to prove that you are a business and sign a declaration that you will only use the vehicle to carry employees.

If it's genuinely for work and it's already commercially taxed, there should be no problem. Registering a business name with the CRO will otherwise be useful for obtaining com tax.

I wouldnt be a registerd business as its only the odd bit of farm work for my father or other farmers around the area, I know i could buy a normal pickup and avoid all this but that means insuring both a car and jeep ant taxing the both of them. when im taxing the crewcab do i have to give names of workers I need to be using the crewcab for.

There's no need to reg. with the CRO, if you're in business and provide a VAT no. or PPS no. you can avail of comm. tax., if it's crew cab you will need the PPS nos of at least 3 employees.
If they apply the law fully these employees can only be carried after they have clocked in or signed on for work, and no taking the kids to school or towing your boat etc.

It's only the crew cab thing that will get you when it comes to taxing it i'd say,if it was a normal 2 seat commercial you'd be ok.

I think with commercial insurance it goes by carrying capacity rather than engine size too,but i could be wrong there.

And my job doesn't need me to drive anywhere for work, let alone drive a van,but i've always had them, mainly so i can have a bigger engine without getting shafted for tax. I'd say everyone that drives a commercial has their own little story made up to rattle off if they ever get asked why they are driving it. I've never been stopped after driving commercials at all hours.

Just don't put people in the back, you'll get the book thrown at you with a lot of force!

strictly speaking you may not use a commercially taxed vehicle for other than commercial purposes, although with the right story you probably would get away with it. Crew Cabs are an entirely different kettle of fish though

Pay your proper dues, like most people do
