Period of notice for employers

In my contract it says four weeks of notice is required if I am leaving the company. It's a part-time retail position and I am moving to a different company which requires me to start within the next week/two.

What are the implications of breaking the contract/leaving after one week or two weeks as opposed to four?

Sorry if this is a bit redundant sounding.

Just speak to your boss, they usually don't have a problem with this kind of stuff.

Even if they do have a problem and tell you that you have to see out your 4 weeks, and then you decide just to not turn up and start the other job I assume they will just terminate your contract. You wouldn't get any back week owed, I don't think anyway (someone can correct me if I'm wrong about that).

Thanks, bud. I just fear legal ramifications/court threats, but I doubt any large company would bother doing that?

I can't see that happening. They are usually fine with this type of stuff, especially in retail.

An employer can not hold wages unless express written permission is given so if you didn't agree to forfeit it in your contract they can't hold it.

Plenty of threads on this so I won't rehash what has been said.

What I will say is it's a pretty poor operator that expects you not to work your notice with your current employer. Very much frowned upon by many of the companies I have worked for and used to raise a massive red flag in interview if someone suggested it.
